Colorado ranchers fight ballot proposal they say would be devastating to ag industry

Colorado ranchers and farmers are fighting against a 2022 proposed ballot measure that they say is yet another attack on the state’s $47 billion agriculture industry . Initiative 16, a section of which is referred to as “Wilbur’s Law,” adds livestock and fish to the state’s animal cruelty law and redefines what constitutes a “sexual act with an animal,” including practices often used in breeding and animal husbandry. It also requires that slaughtering of livestock only occur if an animal has lived a quarter of its natural lifespan — estimated at 20 years for a cow, for example — which would vastly change current practices, considering cattle are often butchered well before they turn 3. The website for the ballot initiative, called Protect Animals from Unnecessary Suffering and Exploitation, or PAUSE , says it will extend animal welfare rights to all farm animals and that there is “no rational reason to exempt farmed animals from basic abuse laws that currently exist to … [Read more...] about Colorado ranchers fight ballot proposal they say would be devastating to ag industry

Engaging in Compassionate Action for Animals

I’ve had the enormous pleasure, over the past few days, of reading anthropologist Barbara J. King’s most recent book, Animals' Best Friends: Putting Compassion to Work for Animals in Captivity and in the Wild . Source: University of Chicago Press King’s book takes up the question of how and why to engage in compassionate actions that help animals, whether by eliminating or reducing harms inflicted by humans or by shaping our own behaviors in ways that allow animals to live their own lives on their own terms. King opens with a discussion of why compassionate action on behalf of animals is so desperately needed and then takes readers into the world of animal advocates working to help animals in the wild, animals with whom we share our homes, animals held captive in zoos, animals who wind up on our plates, and animals used in biomedical research. King’s ideas about compassionate action are driven by stories, and often by her own experiences. I asked Dr. King if … [Read more...] about Engaging in Compassionate Action for Animals

Amazon rainforest: European car manufacturers linked to illegal deforestation, says report

Car seats from manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler, the PSA group (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel) and Renault could be linked to deforestation , the Rainforest Foundation Norway reported on Friday. As the leading exporter of bovine leather, Brazil provides about 30% of this material to the global automotive industry. But before turned into car upholstery, the leather may have been removed from cattle raised on land in the Amazon rainforest that was deforested, possibly illegally. "The purpose of the report is to give an overview of a sector that needs to be studied and that needs transparency," Joana Faggin, the study’s lead author, told DW. "At the moment, no manufacturer can prove that it is not involved in this." The pace of deforestation is picking up. Last year, the Amazon rainforest lost 11,088 square kilometers (4,280 square miles) of land, the largest area cleared over a yearlong period within the last 12 years, according to Brazil’s National Institute for Space … [Read more...] about Amazon rainforest: European car manufacturers linked to illegal deforestation, says report

Citi, JP Morgan destroy Amazon – report

SEATTLE: Major US financial firms are helping fund environmental destruction and indigenous rights abuses in the vast Amazon rainforests with billions of dollars in investments in questionable companies, according to a report published Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila). Six top firms — BlackRock, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Vanguard, Bank of America and Dimensional Fund Advisors — have invested more than $18 billion over the past three years in mining, agribusiness and energy companies involved in a “series of abuses” in the world’s biggest rainforest, found the report by the environmental group Amazon Watch and the Association of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples (APIB). “Major financiers… are using their clients’ money to enable the wanton behavior of companies linked to indigenous rights violations and the devastation of the Amazon rainforest,” said Amazon Watch program director Christian Poirier. “This financial complicity in destruction contradicts the climate and human rights pledges … [Read more...] about Citi, JP Morgan destroy Amazon – report
