High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

SINGAPORE: From April, high-powered electric motorcycles may be used on Singapore's roads, in line with efforts to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles in the country. Under current regulations, only electric motorcycles with a power rating of no more than 10 kilowatts (kW) are allowed. Those motorcycles are also barred from use on expressways. However, from Apr 1, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will allow motorcycles with power ratings of more than than 10kW to be ridden on the roads. Electric motorcycles with a top speed of at least 50kmh will also be allowed on expressways from next month. Announcing the move - as well as a slew of other measures to incentivise the adoption of electric vehicles - Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary said this was in line with efforts to update regulations to keep pace with technology. “Motorcyclists can then now do their part for the environment by choosing an electric model,” said Dr Janil during the … [Read more...] about High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

Shake-up for solar power investment

Baker McKenzie’s managing partner Frederick Burke and special counsel Nguyen Thanh Hai The contents of the decision circulated on January 21 is in draft form, while final contents are subject to further reviews by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), and consultations with other relevant ministries before the prime minister’s final signature. This draft decision would apply the selection mechanism on a long-term basis. Bidding rounds will be conducted based on a so-called Renewable Energy Development Plan formulated by the MoIT for each 5-year period. A more specific plan will be circulated on a biannual basis. The main investor selection mechanism is a so-called “competitive selection of investors based on project location”, which means that: (i) project location will be chosen/determined by the governmental authorities; and (ii) investors must submit bids to compete for securing the project development right at that pre-selected project location. Under this draft … [Read more...] about Shake-up for solar power investment

Wooden swords and replica rifles: History buffs in Indonesia recreate battles to honour national heroes

JAKARTA: With a wooden practice sword in hand and dressed in the manner of a World War II Imperial Japanese Army officer, Jasen Purwa Adi walked into a sun-baked yard of an early 20th century home. On the other side of the yard, a makeshift outpost made out of plywood sheets had been erected, fortified by barbed wire fences and sand bags. The outpost was guarded by seven men in Dutch East Indies Army uniforms and armed with replica rifles and a reproduction machine gun. Adi and three of his men may be outnumbered and outgunned, but within minutes, they seized control of the outpost and took their opponents as prisoners. They were re-enacting the significant moments in the country’s history, from the time the Dutch colonised Indonesia to the 1942 Japanese invasion, the subsequent 1945 proclamation of Indonesia’s independence and the bloody struggles to keep the Allied Forces from reclaiming the country for the Netherlands. About 40 re-enactors - men and women of … [Read more...] about Wooden swords and replica rifles: History buffs in Indonesia recreate battles to honour national heroes
