The Big Read: With globalisation in retreat, ASEAN can offer Singapore a way forward in post-COVID world

SINGAPORE: As the head of a global manufacturing firm headquartered in the Republic, Mr Alessandro Perrotta has sent his Singaporean staff to be based in various countries —  including Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia — where his company has operations. Contrary to popular perceptions, he has never faced resistance from Singaporeans when they have to go to these countries stereotypically viewed as less liveable than the rich city-state, said the chief executive officer of Interplex Holdings. “Singaporeans are some of the most flexible people I know … My team is willing to go anywhere, anytime.” As companies here and elsewhere adjust to a new business normal brought upon by the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Perrotta will continue to focus on the region due to its attractive opportunities. It is an endeavour that Singapore itself has been actively pursuing over the last few decades: Greater regional integration with its neighbours in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). … [Read more...] about The Big Read: With globalisation in retreat, ASEAN can offer Singapore a way forward in post-COVID world

‘No legal prohibition’ at the time when prison service forwarded convict’s letters to AGC, says MHA

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday (Sep 22) said there was “no legal prohibition” in 2018 against the Singapore Prisons Service (SPS) extending letters written by a convicted drug trafficker to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC). Defence lawyer M Ravi alleged during a hearing on Tuesday that SPS had breached client-solicitor privilege by giving private letters from Syed Suhail Syed Zin , who was convicted in 2015, to the AGC. He was set to hang on Sep 18 this year, but the execution was stayed at the last minute after intervention from his lawyer. The “breach” was raised by human rights coalition Community Action Network in a statement on Monday. READ: Court of Appeal orders further arguments in case of drug trafficker on death row, execution on hold In a statement, MHA laid out the circumstances surrounding the incident. It said that during a hearing before the Court of Appeal on May 3, 2018, Syed Suhail informed the Court that he wished to … [Read more...] about ‘No legal prohibition’ at the time when prison service forwarded convict’s letters to AGC, says MHA

The top board members of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) announced that they would resign from their posts on Wednesday after a deadly winter storm system left millions without power amid subzero temperatures. In a Tuesday letter to their fellow board members -- there are 16 in total -- Chairwoman Sally Talberg and vice-chairman Peter Cramton, Terry Bulger and Raymond Hepper wrote that their "hearts go out to all Texans" who had to go without electricity, heat, water and "face the tragic consequences of this emergency." TEXAS UTILITY CUSTOMER FILES $1B LAWSUIT AGAINST GRIDDY AFTER ELECTRIC BILL TOPS $9,000 "We have noted recent concerns about out-of-state board leadership at ERCOT. COVID-19 patients can ‘shed high load of virus’ in first week, irrespective of symptoms: Singapore study

SINGAPORE: COVID-19 patients can shed high loads of the novel coronavirus into the air and onto surfaces in their first week of illness, irrespective of their symptoms, according to a recent Singapore study published by the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID). However, the possibility of a patient infecting others through contaminated surfaces is “negligible” after the second week of illness, said NCID in a media release on Friday (Jun 19). The study was published in collaboration with Duke-NUS Medical School and DSO National Laboratories on May 29 in the Nature Communications science journal. It also suggested a further possibility that novel coronavirus could be dispersed as an aerosol. The new research builds on earlier findings released in March, which showed that people with the novel coronavirus extensively contaminate their bedrooms and bathrooms. India-Pakistan ceasefire had high-level approval, say experts

The decision of India and Pakistan’s Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) was unlikely to have been purely local, say experts, pointing to the language of the joint statement while declaring an observance of the 2003 ceasefire from the midnight of February 24/25, which has the “imprimatur” of high-level approval on it, though there is little clarity on the nature of the back-channel operating between the two countries two days after the announcement. “I would imagine a decision like this in both countries would have involved considerable amount of interagency discussion and consensus. So, whether [Indian officials] were speaking both to the Pakistani military chief or to the Prime Minister’s [office], the two certainly would have been in touch on this,” said former High Commissioner to Pakistan and the Director General of the MEA-run think tank TCA Raghavan, adding that the rising violence at the LoC was the most obvious reason for the “tactical” decision to stop … [Read more...] about India-Pakistan ceasefire had high-level approval, say experts
