Commentary: Why Japan’s move to close schools during COVID-19 outbreak upset many – and not just parents

OSAKA: The biggest problem in Japan is that nobody knows how widespread the COVID-19 outbreak has become when numbers no longer provide an accurate gauge of the situation. With about 256 infected patients in Japan as of Mar 2, excluding those infected onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, these figures do not signal cause for alarm at first sight. Yet, factor in the knowledge that Japan is not testing as much, one cannot escape the nauseating feeling the country has a much higher number of hidden cases waiting to bubble to the surface. JAPAN IS STILL UNSURE HOW BAD THE OUTBREAK IS South Korea has emerged the country with the highest number outside China, after infection cases skyrocketed last week. The country had come under fire for lax hospital rules on patient movement in the initial stages of the outbreak, leading to one super-spreader event at a Shincheonji church. But South Korea has ramped up countermeasures including testing, making rapid diagnostic tests … [Read more...] about Commentary: Why Japan’s move to close schools during COVID-19 outbreak upset many – and not just parents

Hoping to rebound from COVID-19, Johnson sets out school building plan

LONDON: Prime Minister Boris Johnson will set out plans for a 10-year rebuilding programme for schools in England on Monday (Jun 29), part of government efforts to help Britain "bounce back" from the coronavirus crisis. Johnson, whose popularity has flagged over his government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, will make a speech on Tuesday to set out an infrastructure programme, allowing him to return to election pledges that helped him win a large majority. Much of the new spending will be targeted at those areas in northern and central England that had traditionally supported the main opposition Labour Party, but where many voters backed the governing Conservatives at last year's election. Rebuilding schools, which have suffered over the years from government spending cuts, will be his first step, with funding targeted at the buildings in the worst condition in England, especially in northern and central regions. "As we bounce back from the pandemic, it's important we … [Read more...] about Hoping to rebound from COVID-19, Johnson sets out school building plan

Gunman shouted ‘surprise’ before Texas school shooting

The teenager accused of killing 10 people at a Texas high school exchanged "a lot of firepower" with police before he surrendered, a county official has said. Dmitrios Pagourtzis, 17, is suspected of storming an art classroom on Friday armed with his father's legally owned shotgun and handgun. No motive has been made public yet but authorities said the suspect had admitted to carrying out the attack. The gunman told police he avoided students he liked "so he could have his story told". He yelled "surprise" before shooting, according to Texas representative Michael McCaul. Advertisement Pagourtzis also had several kinds of homemade explosive devices, but they were not capable of detonating, said Mark Henry, the Galveston County judge. :: US school shootings: A deadly history More from Texas Texas weather: Joe Biden declares major disaster as deadly freeze sparks water crisis Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raises more than $3m for … [Read more...] about Gunman shouted ‘surprise’ before Texas school shooting

Texas Woman Alleges Price Gouging in $1 Billion Class Action Suit Against Power Retailer

After experiencing more than a $9000 increase in her own power bill between February 13 and February 19, Mount Belvieu, Texas-resident Lisa Khoury has since moved to take legal action against provider Griddy Electric LLC, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in Houston. The proposed class-action lawsuit seeks more than $1 billion in compensatory and punitive damages for customers impacted by what Derek Potts, an attorney representing Khoury, believes is "predatory pricing" amid the recent bouts of extreme winter weather in Texas. "At this point we don’t know how many people might be affected, but there are likely thousands of customers who’ve received these outrageous bills," Potts told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "A class action will be the most efficient and effective way for Griddy’s customers to come together and fight this predatory pricing." The court filing accuses Griddy - which offers wholesale electricity at variable rates for $9.99/mo. - of violating Texas' … [Read more...] about Texas Woman Alleges Price Gouging in $1 Billion Class Action Suit Against Power Retailer

A chef’s journey from rural orphanage to head of a high-end hotel restaurant

Five-year-old Nipaporn Doungiaisantisuk took her father’s hand and left their highland village in the Wawee District of Chiang Rai . They were going to visit her new school, he explained, and she followed with a spring in her step, delighted at the prospect of a new adventure . At the school, her father and teachers chatted about her future in words she couldn’t understand since she only spoke the dialect of her Akha hill tribe. When they were done, he told her to wait outside while he went to use the toilet. That was the last she would see of him for an entire year. “I waited, had a snack and wondered why he was taking so long. Then evening came and I realised he was gone. He had slipped out from a different exit and I was all alone,” she recalled. Tuk, as she is now more affectionately known, wailed and stomped her feet as any five-year-old would. Why would her father leave her in this strange place? Did her mother know about this? When was she going home? No one had … [Read more...] about A chef’s journey from rural orphanage to head of a high-end hotel restaurant
