On a sunny Saturday in February, two policemen on a motorcycle stop Jhon Jairo “Popeye” Velásquez as he walks down the driveway of a dilapidated mansion near Medellin, Colombia. The estate belonged to a former associate of late drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who was killed in 1993, reportedly by Colombian police aided by U.S. Special Forces .. Velásquez, who worked for Escobar, is giving a tour of his old mob hangouts and discussing his future in film and politics. The beat cops aren’t here to arrest him. “We’re intrigued by him,” says the more boyish of the patrolmen, who was born the year Escobar was killed. “It’s really cool to hear the story.” If the officer had been born 20 years earlier, he might have been one of over 500 policemen Velásquez and other assassins from Escobar’s Medellín Cartel murdered in a bloody war against the Colombian government. Instead, he gives Velásquez his patrol number in case of emergency and the policemen ride away. Telescope lasers could give humanity an edge in war against space junk
Telescope operators figured out years ago how to make the stars stop twinkling. Now, a team of Australian scientists wants to use the same technology to track space junk and blast it out of space. The problem is Earth's atmosphere: It's uneven and distorts light passing from space to Earth , and Earth to space. That's a problem, because the nice twinkly effect Earth's atmosphere gives stars makes it difficult for ground-based telescopes to accurately observe the heavens. It's also a problem for efforts to lower the risk of space junk, which threatens satellites and crewed spaceflight, as Live Science previously reported . Ground-based stations use lasers to track individual pieces of space debris, but those lasers get distorted by the same atmospheric effects that make stars twinkle. Now, researchers want to use "adaptive optics," a technology that enables telescopes to de-twinkle the stars, to improve those laser systems. "Without adaptive optics, a telescope sees an … [Read more...] about Telescope lasers could give humanity an edge in war against space junk
Pride Toronto makes the right call on police
The timing was odd. The parameters were blurred. The internal dynamics are sketchy. On the surface, it certainly appears that Pride Toronto and the Toronto Police Service have made peace. Once all the i’s have been dotted and the t’s crossed — most specifically, once a formal request to participate next year has been submitted and approved — cops will again be welcome to fly the blue in the Pride Parade. Whether officers will be permitted to carry their service weapons, whether a police float can be included, are details to be resolved later. But, in uniform, they are no longer personae non gratae . Which is a win for gays — and straights, for that matter — who were deeply dismayed by a previous executive decision that sent cops to Coventry these past two years. There's a new member of the Fast and Furious family--literally for star Vin Diesel.. Diesel's son, Vincent Sinclair, has been added to the cast of F9: The Fast Saga which is currently scheduled to be in theaters on June 25. As EW reports, the 10-year-old son of the franchise star filmed scenes for the new film in 2019, when he was 9 and that it's his first on-camera role. And while it's not officially confirmed who he'll be playing, TMZ reports that Sinclair is playing a young version of Dominic Toretto--the role made famous by his dad. Given what we know about F9 thus far, it makes sense there would be scenes of a young Dom in the ew film. As first revealed in a trailer from early 2020 , John Cena will play Dom's long-lost brother Jakob--who also happens to be an antagonist in the film. If the movie is delving into Toretto family history, there's no better way to show that than with flashbacks. As you likely already know, this movie will also see the return of … [Read more...] about Vin Diesel’s Son Is In Fast & Furious 9, Possibly As Young Dom
