Austria announces 4-week partial lockdown starting Tuesday

VIENNA: Austria on Saturday (Oct 31) announced a partial shutdown that will see restaurants and bars closed for four weeks, cultural, sports and leisure activities canceled, and residents asked to stay home after 8pm as the government tries to stem a sharp rise in coronavirus infections. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the restrictions will apply from Tuesday until the end of November. Restaurants and bars will be closed except for deliveries and takeout, and hotels closed to tourists. Companies affected by the shutdown will be compensated with 80 per cent of their revenue from last November, but will have to keep on their employees. The new restrictions include a curfew telling Austrians to stay at home between 8pm and 6am, although they can go out for reasons that include exercising and going to work. Kurz said the curfew is intended as a “ban on visits" and to prevent private parties that have driven infections. He called for people to work from home where possible. Commentary: Hawker food isn’t what it used to be. And it’s partially our fault

SINGAPORE: Our national pride – hawker culture – is a step closer to being inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. An evaluation body from the agency announced this recommendation on Monday (Nov 16). For Singaporeans, the likelihood that our beloved local food may find a spot on the international hall of fame is both gratifying and affirming. After all, many of us have long sworn by our favourite stalls and food centres. From Maxwell Food Centre to Chomp Chomp and Adam Road Food Centre, most of us grew up eating at these open-air food havens. The scents and sounds, heat and smoke – each little detail is inextricably entwined with intimate memories of family, friends and dates. READ: Commentary: A piece of Southeast Asia in a Singapore dish Yet, for a generation brought up on hawker fare, one cannot help but feel that in recent years, some of these familiar haunts are slowly losing their magic. With the median age … [Read more...] about Commentary: Hawker food isn’t what it used to be. And it’s partially our fault

Researchers urge delay in administering Pfizer vaccine’s second dose

Vials labelled “COVID-19 Coronavirus Vaccine” and a syringe are seen in front of the Pfizer logo in this illustration taken February 9, 2021. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Researchers on Wednesday urged governments to delay administering the second dose of Pfizer Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine, which they said had an efficacy of 92.6% after the first dose. The researchers, Danuta Skowronski and Gaston De Serres, said their findings were derived from Pfizer’s documents submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These findings were also similar to the first-dose efficacy of 92.1% reported for Moderna Inc’s mRNA-1273 vaccine, Skowronski and De Serres said in their letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine. They cautioned that there may be uncertainty about the duration of protection with a single dose, but said that the administration of the second dose a month after the first provided “little added benefit in the short term”. “Given the current … [Read more...] about Researchers urge delay in administering Pfizer vaccine’s second dose

75 coal mines to go under the hammer in second round of auction

In order to keep the interest of new and small players intact, the coal ministry is offering only small- and medium-sized coal mines in the second round. As many as 75 mines will go under the hammer in the second round of auction of commercial coal mines. Thirty-eight mines were on offer in the first round, of which 19 were sold. Out of the 75 mines, 70 are coking mines, used in the thermal power generation sector and five are non-coking mines for steel and metals sector. There are 40 mines that have already been explored with the remaining being partially explored. Chhattisgarh accounts for the highest number of mines, followed by Jharkhand and Odisha. In the first round, Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of mines. Last year, the Centre allowed private firms to commercially mine and sell coal– 47 years after coal mining was nationalised in India. The government amended the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015, in May to open up the coal … [Read more...] about 75 coal mines to go under the hammer in second round of auction

Barcelona hospitals brace as second wave of COVID-19 admissions builds

BARCELONA: For Julio Pascual, a sharp rise in coronavirus admissions at the Barcelona hospital where he serves as medical director carries an unwelcome sense of deja vu. As Spain's total registered cases near 1 million, daily admissions at the Catalan capital's Hospital del Mar have more than doubled to around 16 over the past few days. Situated in a pandemic hotspot, the hospital is better prepared to treat COVID-19 patients than it was in March, but Pascual is concerned over a chronic shortage of nurses, and risks that overworked staff could burn out. "It is not the speed of the first wave but there's an evident uptick in cases," he told Reuters. "If the rhythm (of COVID-19 hospitalisations) of the past week continues, rescheduling and suspending some non-priority activities will become unavoidable."
