Promising young artists

By Eesha Iftikhar Qazi The city of Karachi had its first exclusive all-women arts exhibition titled Andekhey [the obscured] on the 19th and 20th February, to showcase the artwork of aspiring young female artists. The event was organized by Marium Asif at Pinky Gul, one of the only women-centric safe community spaces for women in the metropolis. While art exhibitions are not rare in the country, what makes Andekhey stand out is the space it provides to aspiring female artists whose art has never seen the light of the day. The vision behind the event was to proffer as much space as the artist needs to feel represented and heard, instead of being squeezed as just another name on the wall. Talking about the significance of providing a platform to female artists, organiser Marium Asif said, “We are so conditioned to believe our art is worthless. December 29, 2012 08:22 Olympic champion Kim Yu-na's rise to the pinnacle of world figure skating has spawned a generation of talented young skaters with stars in their eyes. Kim Hae-jin and Park So-youn have both started making it onto the podium at international competitions as they aspire to become the next Kim Yu-na. And now the country has a promising young male skater in the form of 16-year-old Kim Jin-seo, who won a bronze medal at the International Skating Union-sanctioned Junior Grand Prix in Austria in September. As he did not take up figure skating until reaching the sixth grade of elementary school, Jin-seo is considered a late starter. But he proved a fast learner, and as his successes piled up he was selected to the national team after winning the national championships in January. "I have had the hobby of recycling old items and materials since I was a child," Rahal told Xinhua at his small home in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, as he made a small animal toy with fine details out of metal pieces. The young man believed that every person could have their own hobbies and improve their skills through practice, hard work and determination. "What increases the value of these pieces is that they are made of waste," Rahal said. "I feel so content when my works are highly admired."
