Growing mystery—getting to the bottom of the highest peak in the Lower 48

Visitors to Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains often ask Park Geologist Greg Stock the same questions: “What’s up with this mountain range? Is it growing or shrinking? How old is it?” But 150 years ago, people considered the same questions, though the reason they were asking them happened to be very different—those visitors were out to strike it rich on California gold. Mountain ranges, those places where the horizon wins its war with the sky, appear so imposing that they demand explanation even to those unaccustomed to geologic curiosity. Many ranges have origins simple enough that school kids can recite the basic sequence of events. Two tectonic plates smash together like an extremely slow-motion car accident, with a crumple zone in the middle. Or in another flavor of convergence, an oceanic plate is subducted beneath its partner, fueling volcanoes. The first can describe the Himalayas; the second, the Andes. Expect spring to be even drier out west, says NOAA

(CNN) Saturday marks the first day of astronomical spring and the outlook is grim for the western portion of the country, where drought conditions will persist. "Drier conditions in the Southwest US associated with La Niña and the failed 2020 summer monsoon have been contributing factors to the development and intensification of what represents the most significant US spring drought since 2013," said NOAA. Dry weather is expected to linger into the spring, with below average precipitation forecast across much of the West. This will likely make the drought situation even worse. One of the contributing factors to the western drought has been lack of snowfall. The greatest area of snow drought expansion has been in the Sierra Nevada where no large storms have occurred since the strong atmospheric river in late January. This has left almost all of the Sierra Nevada weather stations below the 30th percentile of snow water equivalent, and a few locations in the … [Read more...] about Expect spring to be even drier out west, says NOAA

Hurricane season ends historic as predicted by experts back in April

(CNN) Monday officially marks the final day of Atlantic hurricane season, and it has been one for the record books. 2020 has been undoubtedly a crazy year -- with the Covid-19 pandemic , murder hornets and some of the largest wildfires in recorded history. It seems understandable that hurricane season would also be memorable. This season was forecast to be a busy season. Two of the most well-known and respected entities that forecast their predictions for the upcoming hurricane season are Colorado State University (CSU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). CSU's Tropical Meteorology Project team predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season on April 2. The team forecast 16 named storms, including eight hurricanes. "We were forecasting a well above-average season in April, June and July, and increased that forecast to an extremely active season in August," said Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at the … [Read more...] about Hurricane season ends historic as predicted by experts back in April
