Rugby: Sexton back as Ireland name strong squad for Scotland clash

LONDON: Fit-again captain Johnny Sexton will return when Ireland take on Scotland in their Autumn Nations Cup clash at the Aviva Stadium after coach Andy Farrell named the squad on Thursday (Dec 3). Sexton was forced off the field with a hamstring problem that he sustained in their opening win over Wales and replaces the injured Billy Burns at flyhalf. Uncapped Ulster Rugby prop Eric O'Sullivan is set to make his debut after being named among the replacements, while Robbie Henshaw returns from a groin issue to slot in at inside centre with former Connacht team mate Bundee Aki at outside centre. Farrell did not make changes to the back line for the third-place playoff, opting for the trio of Jacob Stockdale, Keith Earls and Hugo Keenan who all featured in last weekend's 23-10 victory over Georgia. Team: 15. Jacob Stockdale (Lurgan/Ulster) 32 14. Hugo Keenan (UCD/Leinster) 5 13. Bundee Aki (Galwegians/Connacht) 29 Chris Farrell (Young Munster/Munster) 12 12. Ireland call up three newcomers for Autumn Nations Cup

DUBLIN: Ireland have included New Zealand-born wing James Lowe among three newcomers in a 34-man squad for this month’s Autumn Nations Cup, the Irish Rugby Union said on Thursday. Leinster's 28-year-old Lowe qualifies by residency to play for Ireland and has already been training with the squad over the last month but has only now become eligible to play. He is joined on the list of uncapped players by Munster back Shane Daly and Billy Burns while Jack Carty drops out. England Under-20s cap Burns, who plays fly-half for Ulster, qualifies for Ireland due to his Cork-born grandfather. Ireland play Wales, England and Georgia this month. Watarahs ‘broken’ after Brumbies ‘shellacking’

SYDNEY: New South Wales Waratahs coach Rob Penney said he would walk away from the job "gracefully" if it was determined that he was not the man to lead the embattled team forward. The Waratahs have conceded more than 100 points in two record losses to start the Super Rugby AU season after a 41-7 thrashing by the Queensland Reds last week and a 61-10 humbling at the ACT Brumbies on Saturday. New Zealander Penney said his young side were "shattered" and "broken" after a masterclass in ruthless rugby from the nine-try Brumbies at Canberra Stadium. "I love these boys and I'm doing my best," Penney told reporters. "If other people think I'm not the right person, I'm not going to stand in the way. "I just want what's right for the group, if it's determined that that's not me, I'm more than happy to go gracefully." The Waratahs have suffered more than most from the financial crisis in the game caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and lost a squad's worth of internationals in the … [Read more...] about Watarahs ‘broken’ after Brumbies ‘shellacking’
