Russian nuclear-powered submarine enters service amid arms control fears

MOSCOW: Russia's most advanced new nuclear-powered submarine entered service on Friday (Jun 12), the defence ministry said, at a time of growing arms control tensions between Moscow and the West. The Knyaz Vladimir (Prince Vladimir) – designed to carry Bulava intercontinental nuclear missiles – was enrolled into the navy during Friday's Russia Day celebrations. The announcement comes against the background of a rift with Western powers over Ukraine and fears of a burgeoning arms race following the demise of a landmark Cold War-era nuclear pact . Guns in America: Group Vows to Defeat NRA-Backed Concealed Carry Effort

A major gun-violence prevention group has pledged to fight against a National Rifle Association–backed national concealed carry reciprocity effort and against pro-gun candidates in the 2018 midterm elections, as gun-safety advocates work to adjust to a Republican-controlled White House and Congress. Since the beginning of January, federal lawmakers in both the House and Senate have introduced bills pushing for national reciprocity, which has long been a priority for the NRA. Lawmakers in previous congresses have introduced similar measures, … [Read more...] about Guns in America: Group Vows to Defeat NRA-Backed Concealed Carry Effort

The Senate's No. 2 Republican this week introduced a bill that would require states that issue permits allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons to recognize such permits from other states. In a statement on Monday, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said his national concealed carry reciprocity bill would strengthen "both the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and the power of states to implement laws best-suited for the folks who live there." North Carolina Republican Richard Hudson introduced a similar proposal in the House on January 3, the first day of the new Congress, and it now has at least 163 co-sponsors.
