THE DOMINANT Mercedes engine has 'killed' Formula One's competitive foundation, Gene Haas has claimed. The 68-year-old and owner of the Haas team believes that races have become stale during the hybrid era, which has seen Mercedes claim seven consecutive drivers' and constructors' titles. Lewis Hamilton romped to the world championship in 2020 and is heavy favourite to do so again this year. Potential challengers Ferrari, who supply much of the Haas car, have floundered of late, starving the car of power and aiding the Mercs' hegemony. Haas told Racer : "In 2020 when Ferrari had a reduction in their horsepower, it was pretty obvious that all of the Ferrari engine cars had horsepower deficits compared to Mercedes, Honda and Renault. SINGAPORE: In a country where most people do not think twice about buying new clothes, Mr Leow Yee Shiang has not bought a single piece of clothing in the past two years. The 31-year-old civil servant practises what he calls a “minimalist lifestyle”. CALIFORNIA: Last week, the Trump administration took a giant step backward on transportation innovation by issuing a proposal to freeze federal rules requiring automakers to design more efficient, cleaner-running cars. In April, then-US Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt called the current standards “too high” and said they did not “comport with reality". But globally, these standards have helped American automakers to remain competitive as other countries – particularly China – embrace the transition to a low-carbon economy. By reversing course on fuel-efficiency regulations, the United States is encouraging automakers to build outdated vehicles in a globally-evolving market – ceding market leadership to China in the process.
