Baogang issues bond for carbon reduction projects

Baogang Group, the largest iron and steel manufacturer in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, issued a green bond focusing on carbon neutral projects on the Shanghai Stock Exchange recently, the first of its kind in the region's steel industry. The issuing value of the bond is 500 million yuan ($76.5 million) with a term of five years. More than 70 percent of the money raised will be used for projects to reduce carbon emissions. The project is mainly intended to convert recycled blast furnace gases into electricity, which can cut emissions and save energy. Kids will pay – literally – for our delay cutting carbon emissions

ROSA WOODS/STUFF Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on calls from young people that her Government isn't acting fast enough on climate change. OPINION: We’ve all heard the predictions. As global warming continues, future generations will face more uncertain weather and a range of ever-more-frequent related disasters. Storms will become more intense. Between storms, warmer weather will make forests and farms drier and more prone to drought and wildfire. Sea level will rise and marine industries will become more uncertain as ocean waters warm and acidify. It all sounds pretty scary. Future generations will need to be prepared, resourceful and resilient. But will it also be more expensive for them? ‘Taxpayer-Funded Indoctrination’: Farage Slams BBC Children’s Show for Anti-Meat Message

Nigel Farage has criticised the “taxpayer-funded indoctrination of our children” after reports that the iconic BBC children’s educational programme Blue Peter was encouraging children to “go meat free”. Blue Peter has been a staple of British after-school viewing since 1958, with children undertaking tasks to obtain the much-coveted blue badge. The badges can be used to gain free entry to hundreds of attractions in the UK. The BBC programme recently launched a green badge initiative for children who are “climate heroes” and do such things as switching off lights or stopping using single-use plastic bottles. However, the programme garnered criticism for encouraging children to “go meat free”, according to The Times . The “go meat free” message had appeared on a screen during an episode, at the same time a host saying “or choose a meat-free meal”. The teacher told the children: “There are so many gender identities. So we know we have got male and female, but there … [Read more...] about ‘Taxpayer-Funded Indoctrination’: Farage Slams BBC Children’s Show for Anti-Meat Message

Now Is Our Last Best Chance to Confront the Climate Crisis

This story is part of Covering Climate Now, a global journalism collaboration strengthening coverage of the climate story. The Earth’s climate has always been a work in progress. In the 4.5 billion years the planet has been spinning around the sun, ice ages have come and gone, interrupted by epochs of intense heat. The highest mountain range in Texas was once an underwater reef. Camels wandered in evergreen forests in the Arctic. Then a few million years later, 400 feet of ice formed over what is now New York City. But amid this geologic mayhem, humans have gotten lucky. For the past 10,000 years, virtually the entire stretch of human civilization, people have lived in what scientists call “a Goldilocks climate” — not too hot, not too cold, just right. Auto industry gets smart, adapts to market changes

While auto sales in China suffered a significant drop of 42.4 percent in the first quarter of 2020, they have steadily rebounded and, in 2020, exceeded 25 million units, accounting for 33 percent of the world's auto sales. The Chinese government has made development of new energy vehicles a priority for the country. In September, President Xi Jinping announced the plan to have the country's CO2 emissions peak before 2030, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Two months later, the State Council, China's Cabinet, also announced a 15-year (2021-35) industry development plan, setting clear targets for penetration of new energy vehicles: to achieve 20 percent by 2025, 40 percent by 2030, and more than 50 percent by 2035.Major government incentives include tax exemptions and support for the construction of electric vehicle charging stations. As a result, new energy vehicles accounted for 5.4 percent of total auto sales in China last year and are expected to grow to 6.9 percent … [Read more...] about Auto industry gets smart, adapts to market changes
