SINGAPORE: In Rwanda, being caught with a plastic bag is a crime. The African nation is so serious about tackling the global plastic pollution crisis that since a decade ago, it is illegal to import, produce, use or sell plastic bags and plastic packaging except for specific industries such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Those caught carrying illegal plastic are liable to be fined, jailed or forced to make public confessions, the New York Times reported last year. In 2017, another African nation, Kenya, also enacted a law to punish anyone making, selling or importing plastic bags with as much as four years in jail or a US$19,000 (S$26,140) fine. While their measures to combat plastic pollution are not as drastic compared to Rwanda or Kenya, more than 40 countries the world over including China, the United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia have banned, restricted or taxed the use of single-use plastics. The European Union (EU) is planning to enact a ban on such use among its … [Read more...] about The Big Read: As countries wage war on plastics, the jury’s still out on how best to tackle the problem

Liverpool v Chelsea: Klopp and Tuchel take familiar paths to Premier League showdown
You could be forgiven, though, for thinking there is a much stronger bond between two men from the same country, whose paths from young heavy-metal upstarts to coaching heavyweights have taken eerily similar paths. There are striking facets in each man's style of play too. The high intensity pressing, the devastating speed of the counter-attack, the fluidity of the forwards. PL FIXTURES | RESULTS | POINTS TABLE Now, whether you are a believer in fate or coincidence, the two are set to battle in the Premier League for the first time on Thursday when Chelsea – unbeaten so far under Tuchel – visit Anfield to take on Klopp's Liverpool. With that in mind, let's take a trip down memory lane. BECOMING THE MAINZ MAN "I had fourth-division feet and a first-division head". The beauty of slow travel: Exploring South Korea’s Jeju Island on foot
The Jeju Olle Trail has been called the South Korean Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage route that leads to the shrine of the apostle St James in Santiago de Compostela, northern Spain. Though the Olle Trail doesn’t lead to resting places of saints, the trek can turn out to be a somewhat religious experience – usually around the time the faint throbbing in the vicinity of your feet becomes palpable. It’s at this stage you start praying the end of the trail is around the next corner. FINDING THE PATH The trail is the brainchild of former news editor Suh Myung Sook. Mentally drained after 23 years as a political journalist, Suh decided to quit her job and do some soul-searching for the next chapter of her life. At age 50, she decided to travel the 800km Camino de Santiago alone. The rustic, unspoiled vistas on the Camino reminded her of Jeju, where she was born and raised. It planted the thought of creating a similar trail back home, to explore “the beauty of … [Read more...] about The beauty of slow travel: Exploring South Korea’s Jeju Island on foot
Taylor Swift concealed facial-recognition camera to identify stalkers on tour
When thousands of fans went to Taylor Swift's Reputation concert in the US, they didn't just pass through metal detectors. Nope, Swift's security team went high-tech to spot stalkers. According to Rolling Stone, a facial recognition camera was operational at the singer's Rose Bowl concert in California – cleverly concealed inside a display unit showing video clips of tour rehearsals. That camera took pictures of everyone who stopped to look. "Everybody who went by would stop and stare at it, and the software would start working," said Mike Downing, chief security office of Oak View Group, in Rolling Stone. The pictures were then transferred to Nashville, where they were cross-referenced with a database of Taylor's alleged stalkers. The Look What You Made Me Do singer has been in the news for having individuals accused of stalking her. One man, who was accused of threatening to kill her and her family, has been sentenced to 10 years of probation, reported E! News. … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift concealed facial-recognition camera to identify stalkers on tour
