Breyer Horses and My Little Pony are neck-and-neck in the race to the National Toy Hall of Fame in the US, making the list of 12 finalists for the Class of 2020, announced Wednesday (Sep 9). Baby Nancy, an ethnically correct black doll unlike those produced before her debut in 1968, is also up for the honour. The games Risk, Sorry, Yahtzee, bingo and Jenga also made the list, which is rounded out by Lite-Brite, Masters of the Universe, sidewalk chalk and the 1990s virtual pet, Tamagotchi. Three of the finalists will be inducted into the hall on Nov 5. "These 12 toys represent the wide scope of playthings – from simple sidewalk chalk that has its roots in ancient times, to Baby Nancy, which proved a turning point in the representation of race in dolls, to the more recent, highly innovative Tamagotchi," Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections, said in a news release. Bensch said all the nominees have influenced how people play, one of the key criteria for earning a … [Read more...] about Tamagotchi, Risk, Jenga, My Little Pony among finalists for US Toy Hall of Fame

The pandemic of work-from-home injuries: Causes and solutions
Elizabeth Cuthrell, a Manhattan-based film producer, used to work in an ergonomic office space: Comfortable desk chair, monitor at eye level, external keyboard. Then came COVID-19. During stay-at-home she worked on a laptop from a wicker chair, or sometimes on a couch with “cushions like marshmallows.” A month later she felt pain in her neck, wrist and shoulders that sent her to a chiropractor. “It’s hard to quantify, but this has been a really, really big issue for a lot of my patients,” said Karen Erickson, the chiropractor who treated Cuthrell. Chiropractors report a surge of injuries and discomfort stemming from the nationwide push to work from home, as millions of workers have spent months clacking away on sofas and beds and awkward kitchen counters. Out with ergonomics, in with hunching over laptops. According to an April Facebook survey from the American Chiropractic Association, 92 per cent of chiropractors (out of 213 respondents) said that patients report more neck … [Read more...] about The pandemic of work-from-home injuries: Causes and solutions
Online concerts and government spending: How K-pop is riding out the COVID-19 pandemic
SEOUL: In June 2013, a seven-member boyband released its first music video No More Dream. The track reached the heady heights of #84 on the South Korean government-sponsored Gaon Music Chart. Six years on, BTS would become just the third group in 50 years to have three number one albums on the Billboard 200 charts in less than 12 months. Recently, its first all-English single Dynamite made its debut at the top of the Billboard singles chart, making BTS the first South Korean singer or group to achieve such a feat. With dismal economic data at every turn because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the success of BTS has been welcome news for South Korea, not just for cultural pride but also for the tangible benefits that come with it. A government study projects that the chart-busting Dynamite will generate 1.7 trillion won (US$1.43 billion) of economic activity and nearly 8,000 new jobs.
