Prince Philip ‘asked Charles to visit hospital to talk of Royal Family’s future’

Prince Philip likely wanted son Charles to visit him in hospital to discuss the future of the Royal Family, according to an ex-Palace official. The Queen's former press officer Dickie Arbiter said the visit at London's private King Edward VII Hospital last Saturday would have been at Philip's "request". Speaking on True Royalty TV's weekly The Royal Beat programme earlier today, Mr Arbiter said the Duke of Edinburgh will have been looking to the future when he is no longer around. "He was just saying to Charles, 'one day you are going to be the leading man of the family'," he continued. Mr Arbiter, 81, served the Queen from 1988 until 2000. What are your thoughts on the future of the Royal Family? Let us know in the comments He was speaking following reports the Duke, 99, would be spending a second weekend in hospital while receiving treatment for an infection. Commentary: Conflict in families has more negative outcomes on children than divorce does

SINGAPORE: In our line of work, we have the opportunity to observe upfront some of the biggest stressors that families in Singapore go through. They run the gamut of financial hardship, family dysfunction and very commonly, conflict among spouses. Let me sketch out two such cases we have seen and what we can learn about how children are afflicted by conflict. The first is a woman called Lily. She was the oldest of three children and for eight years since she was a child, she witnessed violence that took place regularly between her parents in their four-room flat. READ: Fewer marriages, more divorces in Singapore last year Lily’s mother eventually divorced her husband. But Lily bore the scars of these years. Filled with resentment and anger, she stopped school at 12, ran away from home and eventually became pregnant with her boyfriend’s child when she was 17. But despite her difficulties as a single parent, Lily was determined to be a good mother to her child. She … [Read more...] about Commentary: Conflict in families has more negative outcomes on children than divorce does

Are you an active listener? Here are tips on how to better communicate with your family

On a recent morning, my family was assembled in our customary positions at the kitchen table: My husband, Tom, and I hunched over our computers, while our daughter, wearing headphones, did math problems for remote learning. Looking up to ask Tom a question, my view was blocked by a Jenga-like tower of clutter he had amassed. I took a deep breath and explained, in my best impersonation of calm, that in this surreal new world in which children share our co-working space, it’s important to keep that space relatively clutter-free. When I was done, he didn’t respond. But just as a vein in my forehead began to pound, he offered his own interpretation of what I had said. “You’d like me to get rid of the garbage barge on the table,” Tom said. “Yes,” I answered, relieved. Rather than deny the existence of the barge, or start a fight about how, in the grand scheme of things, the barge was unimportant, as he used to do, Tom was paraphrasing –  repeating back your partner’s … [Read more...] about Are you an active listener?
