If we want to walk easily and well as we age, we may need to do more than just stroll now, according to an eye-opening new study of older walkers and cyclists. The study finds that people who often cycle for exercise can walk more efficiently than people whose primary exercise is placid walking, even if everyone works out for the same amount of time. The results, which build on earlier work involving walkers and runners, raise important questions about whether gentle exercise, by itself, is enough for our well-being or if we might need, at least sometimes, to add oomph to our workouts. In general, exercise science shows that doing something – anything – physical is much better for our health and longevity than doing nothing. A raft of epidemiological studies indicate that if men and women start moving just enough to lift themselves out of the group of people who are the most sedentary, they get greater reductions in their risks for chronic diseases and premature death than if a … [Read more...] about If you want to age well, consider picking up the pace when you exercise

The pandemic of work-from-home injuries: Causes and solutions
Elizabeth Cuthrell, a Manhattan-based film producer, used to work in an ergonomic office space: Comfortable desk chair, monitor at eye level, external keyboard. Then came COVID-19. During stay-at-home she worked on a laptop from a wicker chair, or sometimes on a couch with “cushions like marshmallows.” A month later she felt pain in her neck, wrist and shoulders that sent her to a chiropractor. “It’s hard to quantify, but this has been a really, really big issue for a lot of my patients,” said Karen Erickson, the chiropractor who treated Cuthrell. Chiropractors report a surge of injuries and discomfort stemming from the nationwide push to work from home, as millions of workers have spent months clacking away on sofas and beds and awkward kitchen counters. Out with ergonomics, in with hunching over laptops. According to an April Facebook survey from the American Chiropractic Association, 92 per cent of chiropractors (out of 213 respondents) said that patients report more neck … [Read more...] about The pandemic of work-from-home injuries: Causes and solutions
Inside the stunning Black mythos of Drexciya and its Afrofuturist ’90s techno
“ARE DREXCIYANS WATER-BREATHING, AQUATICALLY MUTATED DESCENDANTS OF THOSE UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS OF HUMAN GREED? ... DID THEY MIGRATE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN AND ON TO THE GREAT LAKES OF MICHIGAN? DO THEY WALK AMONG US? ARE THEY MORE ADVANCED THAN US, AND WHY DO THEY MAKE THEIR STRANGE MUSIC? WHAT IS THEIR QUEST?” With those all-caps words, musician and writer James Stinson wrote the constitution for the mythic, rhythmic nation of Drexciya —a world that he and partner Gerald Donald created in the liner notes of their experimental music project. Their combined work, in the form of five EPs of cutting-edge techno music, did not necessarily sound so politically or culturally charged. Because Stinson and Donald did not participate in interviews or widely tour in support of their albums, Drexciya's listeners were left to look at the stories and questions that covered the liner notes and artwork printed on the releases' vinyl and CD versions. Should you … [Read more...] about Inside the stunning Black mythos of Drexciya and its Afrofuturist ’90s techno
Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin can’t build castle library in New Mexico
Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin won't be able to build a seven-sided, castle-style library at his compound in Santa Fe that drew objections from neighbours. The city's Historic Districts Review Board on Tuesday (Sep 8) denied a request to allow Martin to exceed the building height limit in the historic district where he lives, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. The project included a roof deck and an elevator tower. "It is a medieval castle, and I don't understand how we could possibly approve it in this style," board member Frank Katz said. Mark Graham lives south of the property and said residents couldn't "support having a castle in the neighbourhood." "With the notoriety of Mr Martin and Game Of Thrones, we absolutely fear that our neighbourhood will become the next treasure hunt, that his fans will be looking to find the castle that's in the middle of Santa Fe," Graham said. Officials also denied a similar proposal early this year, saying the project didn't … [Read more...] about Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin can’t build castle library in New Mexico
Citigroup’s Jane Fraser to become first woman to head a Wall St. bank
REUTERS: Citigroup Inc on Thursday named consumer banking head Jane Fraser to succeed Michael Corbat next year as the bank's chief executive officer, making her the first woman to lead a major Wall Street bank. Fraser, 53, has been a rising star in the financial industry, with a career that spans investment banking, wealth management, troubled mortgage workouts and strategy in Latin America – a key business for Citigroup. Her promotion to CEO was widely expected since she was elevated to Citigroup president last year, and was celebrated as a step in the right direction for an industry that has few women or diverse executives in its top ranks. "Great news for the company and for women everywhere!” tweeted Bank of America Corp operations and technology chief Cathy Bessant. “A big and fantastic moment.” "Jane will become our first female CEO, a point of pride for all of us and groundbreaking for our industry," Corbat said in an internal memo that was seen by Reuters.
