Former Oasis owner looks to get teeth into £700m dentistry chain IDH

A former owner of the Oasis dentistry business is in pole position to clinch a £700m takeover of IDH Group, one of Britain’s biggest chains of dental practices. Sky News has learnt that Bridgepoint, the private equity firm, has become the preferred bidder for IDH, which runs about 595 surgeries across the UK. Bridgepoint has seen off competition for the business from Bestway, the family-owned conglomerate best known for its cash-and-carry operations. A finalised deal remains some weeks away, partly as a result of the complex shareholder structure that exists between IDH's current owners, Carlyle and Palamon. Banking sources indicated that Palamon could seek to retain part of its stake under a new ownership structure. Advertisement It is unclear whether the current shareholders will see a meaningful return from a sale because of the level of debt within IDH. Bridgepoint sold Oasis to Bupa in 2016 for more than £800m, and is understood to have … [Read more...] about Former Oasis owner looks to get teeth into £700m dentistry chain IDH

Attack of the Killer Bacteria: Superbugs, Prepare to Die!

Predatory bacteria that devour microbes could help kill potentially lethal drug-resistant germs when antibiotics fail, researchers say.Antibiotics currently help fight bacterial infections both in people and livestock, saving countless lives. However, constant use of these drugs has now bred germs resistant to many antibiotics — superbugs that some experts warn could lead to apocalyptic scenarios. Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated that each year in the United States, nearly 2 million patients acquire infections in hospitals. Many of these infections are caused by these drug-resistant contagions.Scientists are hunting for ways to overcome drug-resistant bacteria, such as viruses known as bacteriophages, which infect and kill only bacteria. Now investigators suggest predatory bacteria that eat other bacteria may serve as vital allies, too. [7 Devastating Infectious Diseases]"The use of biological agents against antibiotic-resistant bacteria … [Read more...] about Attack of the Killer Bacteria: Superbugs, Prepare to Die!

UCLA: Research Could Hold Key To Treatments For Osteoporosis

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry announced Wednesday that they have come one step closer to understanding the complex biological mechanisms that lead to osteoporosis, the bone disease that affects some 200 million people throughout the world. Researchers found that when an epigenetic factor called KDM4B is absent from mesenchymal stem cells , or cells in the bone marrow, the cells are far more likely to differentiate into fat cells than bone cells, resulting in an unhealthy imbalance that worsens skeletal aging and leads over time to brittle bones and fractures. RELATED: Porn King Larry Flynt, Founder Of Hustler Magazine, Dead At 78 Researchers said the findings from their study in mice, published online in the journal Cell Stem Cell, could hold an important key to developing more effective treatments for osteoporosis and improving the lives of an aging population. “We know that bone loss comes with age, … [Read more...] about UCLA: Research Could Hold Key To Treatments For Osteoporosis
