Walt Disney Animation Studios has never shied away from putting its own spin on popular genres, whether it’s the superhero-inspired Big Hero 6 or the gaming fantasy of Wreck-It Ralph . And, by and large, those forays have all managed to cast the Disney magic that makes them critical and commercial hits. With Raya and the Last Dragon , Disney tries its luck with a new genre: The martial arts hero’s journey. And much like the aforementioned films, Raya finds inspiration in all the right places, and imbues it with the sort of emotional weight and bright, fantastic aesthetic we’ve come to expect with Disney’s big-screen adventures. In a world … Directed by Don Hall ( Big Hero 6 ) and Carlos López Estrada ( Blindspotting ), Raya and the Last Dragon follows a young warrior, Raya (voiced by Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran), as she sets out to reverse the damage done to the fractured world of Kumandra by the sinister creatures known as Druun. Along the way, she … [Read more...] about Raya and the Last Dragon review: Martial arts and fantasy merged beautifully

Art installation showcases robo-dog paintball rampage; Boston Dynamics condemns use of tech
“Spot’s Rampage” is an art installation by art group MSCHF. Image: screengrab from MSCHF’s spotsrampage.com website A provocative art installation showcased the potential violent use of advanced robotics by arming a robot dog with a paintball gun and gave the public free control—and Boston Dynamics is not happy about it. The American tech company, which produces the said advanced quadruped robots called Spot, condemned the said project for its “provocative use” of its technology via a statement released on Feb. 20. “Today we learned that an art group is planning a spectacle to draw attention to a provocative use of our industrial robot, Spot. To be clear, we condemn the portrayal of our technology in any way that promotes violence, harm, or intimidation,” the company stressed. “Our mission is to create and deliver surprisingly capable robots that inspire, delight [and] positively impact society,” it added. NYC Art House Movie Theaters Awaken After Year Of Hibernation, But One Holds The Popcorn
Popcorn and all other concessions will not be sold at the IFC Center , at least for now. But films, actual films, will be projected on all five of its screens beginning Friday for the first time in nearly a year. “The room will be black — you won’t be on your phone!” Kajillionaire director Miranda July marveled in a video testimonial. That’s a dramatic change from the home viewing environment during Covid-19. The IFC, a Greenwich Village mainstay that took over the abandoned Waverly Theater site in 2005, is among a select number of New York art houses reopening today. The economics are daunting. With state coronavirus restrictions capping attendance at 25% capacity, theaters can expect no more than a few dozen ticket buyers per show in the early going. Even at such modest scale, the market will be watched closely by the film business, which got a lift last weekend with Tom & Jerry grossing $14.1 million despite also streaming on HBO Max. New York’s Famed Lincoln Plaza Art House Theatre Scheduled To Close In January
EXCLUSIVE: The Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, a temple of the art house movie scene in New York for 30 years, is at the end of its lease and is scheduled to close in January, Deadline has learned. While we have been told that others are exploring ways to step in to preserve the site as a movie theatre, if the influential six-screen multiplex does go dark, it would be a crushing blow to the specialty film business. A long list of films, including Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 , began their high-grossing, award-winning runs with exclusive engagements there. Long operated under a joint venture involving Dan Talbot , France’s Gaumont banner and building owner Milstein Properties, Lincoln Plaza has gotten a little scruffy and run-down over the years. One can only imagine what an exhibitor with more resources, anyone from AMC to Alamo Drafthouse, could do with the place.
