Kings trade Jeff Carter to Penguins for pair of draft picks

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Kings traded forward Jeff Carter to the Pittsburgh Penguins late Sunday night for a pair of conditional draft picks. Kings vice-president and general manager Rob Blake said the franchise will have a conditional third-round selection in the 2022 NHL draft and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2023 draft. Pittsburgh GM Ron Hextall spent seven seasons with the Kings as assistant general manager, including when they won their first Stanley Cup in 2012. Carter has played 16 years in the NHL with the last nine-plus seasons coming with the Kings, who he helped to a pair of Stanley Cup titles. The 36-year-old forward was acquired from Columbus during the 2011-12 season. During his time with the Kings, he led the team in power-play (57) and game-winning goals (44), was second in goals (194), third in points (383) and fourth in assists (189). In 40 games this season, Carter has eight goals and 11 assists. He leaves Los Angeles tied for 10th in … [Read more...] about Kings trade Jeff Carter to Penguins for pair of draft picks

Kings re-sign Alex Iafallo to 4-year, $16 million contract

Alex Iafallo is staying right where he is with the Los Angeles Kings. The team announced on Monday afternoon that it has re-signed the veteran forward to a four-year contract worth a total of $16 million. That comes out to a salary cap hit of $4 million per season for the 27-year-old forward. [MORE: NHL Trade Deadline Tracker ] A pending UFA after this season, Iafallo had been a possible trade candidate leading up to Monday’s deadline as the rebuilding Kings remain on the outside of the Stanley Cup Playoff picture in the West Division. They completed a trade involving Jeff Carter , sending him to Pittsburgh for two draft picks, just about 12 hours before re-signing Iafallo. With a new contract in hand, he is obviously not going anywhere. At least for now. In 39 games this season he has 11 goals and 17 assists, which is pretty much right in line with what he has produced over the first three years of his career. At 27 there probably is not much additional upside here and … [Read more...] about Kings re-sign Alex Iafallo to 4-year, $16 million contract

Sex, Trump, and Insurrection: Alabama Republicans Are at It Again

The insurrectionary Mo Brooks and the horndog John Merrill, continuing the Alabama GOP traditions of extremism and hypocrisy. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer. Photos: Getty Images What is it about Alabama Republicans? GOP Senator Richard Shelby’s recently announced retirement created a rare opportunity for ambitious right-wing pols in a very red state, particularly given the likely Republican tilt of the 2022 midterms. But this being Alabama, high jinks are already ensuing as one potential candidate, secretary of State John Merrill, self-destructed this past week, while another, Representative Mo Brooks, let his freak flag fly. It’s the sort of behavior we’ve come to expect from the dominant party in the Heart of Dixie. This is the state GOP that gave the world “Luv Guv” Robert Bentley, the libidinous old Baptist deacon who held on to office grimly after being caught in a lurid sex scandal involving a top aide before finally resigning in 2017 as part of a plea deal … [Read more...] about Sex, Trump, and Insurrection: Alabama Republicans Are at It Again
