Hot shooting, strong defense power CU Buffs to thorough win over No. 19 USC

Tad Boyle probably would be the first person to say an NCAA Tournament bid isn’t assured until Colorado sees its name in the 68-team bracket on Selection Sunday. Yet the Buffaloes understood the three-game homestand scheduled to complete the regular season offered a huge opportunity to cement those credentials for the Big Dance. And on Thursday night, the Buffs got that final homestand started by looking every bit like an NCAA Tournament team. Powered by a torrid shooting performance from Jeriah Horne and another memorable game from point guard McKinley Wright IV, the Buffs never trailed after USC converted the game’s opening basket, dominating the 19th-ranked Trojans for an 80-62 win at the CU Events Center. The victory keeps alive the Buffs’ slim but very real chance at landing the top seed at the Pac-12 Conference tournament and gave CU its third consecutive regular season sweep of the Trojans. The win also gave CU its 12th conference win, the program’s most since joining … [Read more...] about Hot shooting, strong defense power CU Buffs to thorough win over No. 19 USC

Iran’s top nuclear scientist stayed in shadows but his work was uncovered

VIENNA/DUBAI: Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was killed on Friday (Nov 28), led a life of such secrecy that even his age was under wraps but much about the clandestine nuclear weapons programme he is believed to have run has long been known. The UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it suspected Fakhrizadeh oversaw secret work to fit a warhead on a ballistic missile, test high explosives suitable for a nuclear weapon and process uranium. Iran insists it never had such a programme nor any ambition to make a bomb. The IAEA and US intelligence agencies believe it had a coordinated weapons programme that it halted in 2003. Western suspicions that Iran would resume that programme were at the heart of the deal struck in a 2015 deal under which Tehran agreed with world powers to curb its nuclear work in return for the lifting of sanctions. Israel, Iran's arch foe, staunchly opposed that deal and President Donald Trump pulled out of it in 2018. The killing of … [Read more...] about Iran’s top nuclear scientist stayed in shadows but his work was uncovered

North Korea blows up liaison office with South in Kaesong

SEOUL: North Korea blew up an inter-Korean liaison office on its side of the border on Tuesday (Jun 16), after days of increasingly virulent rhetoric from Pyongyang. The demolition came after Kim Yo Jong - the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - said at the weekend the "useless north-south joint liaison office" would soon be seen "completely collapsed". Footage of the explosion released by Seoul's presidential Blue House showed a blast rolling across several buildings just across the border in Kaesong, with a nearby tower partially collapsing as clouds of smoke rose into the sky. Analysts say Pyongyang may be seeking to manufacture a crisis to increase pressure on Seoul while nuclear negotiations with Washington are at a standstill. After an emergency meeting, the National Security Council said it would "react strongly" if Pyongyang "continues to take steps that aggravate the situation". "All responsibility for repercussions stemming from this action … [Read more...] about North Korea blows up liaison office with South in Kaesong

Dow cracks 30,000, a psychological boost during a pandemic

NEW YORK: The Dow Jones Industrial Average clocked its fastest 10,000 point run up to cross 30,000 for the first time on Tuesday, giving the stock market a psychological boost at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has damaged the economy and left millions unemployed. Investor sentiment has been lifted by encouraging news about coming coronavirus vaccines and improving prospects for a smooth White House transition. But the milestone is less significant to professional investors. At 30,000 points the Dow could lure in small investors still on the sidelines who are now eager to share in the market exuberance. But market watchers say they are less impressed than they were with the 20,000 mark reached in January 2017, and technically speaking it means little beyond making a headline that can turn heads. The DJIA on Tuesday surged 1.45 per cent, or 429 points, to trade at a record high 30,015 points, not quite four years after reaching the 20,000 mark on Jan 25, 2017. Catalysts … [Read more...] about Dow cracks 30,000, a psychological boost during a pandemic
