SINGAPORE: From April, high-powered electric motorcycles may be used on Singapore's roads, in line with efforts to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles in the country. Under current regulations, only electric motorcycles with a power rating of no more than 10 kilowatts (kW) are allowed. Those motorcycles are also barred from use on expressways. However, from Apr 1, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will allow motorcycles with power ratings of more than than 10kW to be ridden on the roads. Electric motorcycles with a top speed of at least 50kmh will also be allowed on expressways from next month. Announcing the move - as well as a slew of other measures to incentivise the adoption of electric vehicles - Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary said this was in line with efforts to update regulations to keep pace with technology. “Motorcyclists can then now do their part for the environment by choosing an electric model,” said Dr Janil during the … [Read more...] about High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

JEONGSEON, South Korea: The rows of solar panels in Jeongseon county stand in stark contrast to what surrounds the gleaming installations. Jeongseon is coal country. Up until the 1990s, there were as many as 500 coal mines in operation. Now there are three. Gangwon province, which Jeongseon is part of, provided the power that fuelled South Korea's post-war growth. For several years under different administrations, the South Korean government has made numerous pledges to move away from a heavy dependence on fossil fuels to renewables, by focusing on more environmentally friendly industries. President Moon Jae-in did the same this year. He introduced what was dubbed the Green New Deal, as part of a wider strategy of transforming South Korea's heavily polluting industries into greener ones, while steering Asia's fourth-largest economy out of a coronavirus-induced stupor. REUTERS: Uber Technologies Inc on Tuesday said every vehicle on its global ride-hailing platform will be electric by 2040, and it vowed to contribute US$800 million through 2025 to help drivers switch to battery-powered vehicles, including discounts for vehicles bought or leased from partner automakers. Uber, which as of early February said it had 5 million drivers worldwide, said it formed partnerships with General Motors and the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi alliance. In addition to the vehicle discounts, Uber said the US$800 million includes discounts for charging and a fare surcharge for electric and hybrid vehicles, the cost of which would be partially offset by an additional small fee charged to customers who request a "green trip." Uber said that vehicles on its rides platform in the United States, Canada and Europe will be zero-emission by 2030, taking advantage of the regulatory support and advanced infrastructure in those regions. KUALA LUMPUR: As the dust settles in Putrajaya with a new Cabinet set to be announced, the picture at the state level appears to be far more complex, with coalitions being formed sometimes without regard for the political divide. States helmed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) now find themselves facing uncertainty, with the departure of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) from the coalition. At the federal level, Bersatu has joined forces with Barisan Nasional (BN), which includes United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), as well as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) to form a new alliance. In Melaka, Governor Mohd Khalil Yaakob told PH’s chief minister Adly Zahari from Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) that he no longer commands the majority support in the state assembly. Rejecting Mr Adly’s proposal for the state assembly to be dissolved, Mr Mohd Khalil said a new chief minister for Melaka will be sworn in on Friday (Mar 6). On Thursday, Melaka BN said it would not work with state … [Read more...] about Multiple realignments in Malaysian state assemblies after switch in federal power
