Rockets fall inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, child killed: Military

BAGHDAD: Four Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone and security officials said the attack targeted the US embassy, Iraqi police and security sources said on Tuesday (Nov 17). Sirens blared from the embassy inside the zone, which houses government buildings and foreign missions. One security source said at least four rockets were fired and some of them landed nearby. A military statement said that seven Katyusha rockets were fired, four that fell inside the Green Zone and three outside, which killed a child and wounded five people. The military said earlier four rockets were fired from an eastern district of the capital, but did not provide more details. Footage from the military showed a rocket launcher fixed on the back of a mini-truck which was set on fire. Two diplomatic sources based inside the Green Zone said they heard an anti-rocket system set up to defend the US embassy. One of the sources said a blast shook the building. … [Read more...] about Rockets fall inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, child killed: Military

US retails sales blow expectations in September; dark clouds gathering

WASHINGTON: U.S. retail sales accelerated in September, rounding out a strong quarter of economic activity, but the recovery from the COVID-19 recession is at a crossroads as government money runs out and companies continue to layoff workers. New coronavirus cases are also surging across the country, which could lead to restrictions on businesses like restaurants, gyms and bars, and undercut consumer spending. The economy is already shifting into lower gear. Other data on Friday showed an unexpected drop in output at factories last month. "Although sales growth is strong, it will slow through the rest of this year and into next year," said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "The slowing will be even larger if Congress does not pass another stimulus bill. Unemployment remains pervasive throughout the U.S. economy." Retail sales jumped 1.9per cent last month as consumers bought motor vehicles and clothing, dined out and splashed out on … [Read more...] about US retails sales blow expectations in September; dark clouds gathering

Tesla sets revenue record, makes profit thanks to pollution credit sales to rivals

REUTERS: Tesla Inc on Wednesday reported its fifth consecutive quarterly profit on record revenue of US$8.8 billion, boosted by an uptick in vehicle deliveries and sales of environmental regulatory credits to other automakers. The electric car maker also affirmed its target to deliver half a million vehicles by the end of this year, a goal that will require it to significantly ramp up vehicle sales in the fourth quarter. Shares were up 2.5per cent at US$433.88 in extended trade as the carmaker beat analysts' estimates. Tesla said it had the capacity installed to produce and deliver 500,000 vehicles this year, but added that achieving its goal has become more difficult. "Achieving this target depends primarily on quarter over quarter increases in Model Y and Shanghai production," the company said. Asked by an analyst during a conference call whether Tesla aimed to deliver 840,000 to 1 million vehicles next year, based on its factories' current maximum capacity, Chief … [Read more...] about Tesla sets revenue record, makes profit thanks to pollution credit sales to rivals

US existing home sales rise for fifth straight month

WASHINGTON: US home sales increased for a fifth straight month in October, but record-high house prices because of tight supply could slow momentum. The National Association of Realtors said on Thursday that existing home sales increased 4.3 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.85 million units last month. Data for September was revised up to a rate of 6.57 million units from the previously reported 6.54 million units. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales would fall 1.2 per cent to a rate of 6.45 million units in October. Existing home sales, which account for the bulk of US home sales, jumped 26.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis in October. Sales increased in all four regions last month and continued to be concentrated in the upper price end of the market. The housing market is being driven by record low mortgage rates. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen at least 21 per cent of the labour force working from home, has led to a migration from city … [Read more...] about US existing home sales rise for fifth straight month

Alibaba boasts US$70.6 billion sales as first post-virus Singles’ Day nears end

HANGZHOU: China's Alibaba said orders on its e-commerce platforms during the Singles' Day shopping extravaganza had exceeded US$70 billion by Wednesday (Nov 11) evening, as lockdown-weary consumers splashed out on as many as 16 million discounted goods. The world's biggest sales event - eclipsing Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States - spans four main days this year, and so far has brought sellers 20 times as many orders by value than Amazon's two-day global Prime Day last month. Such is its size that its performance is widely considered indicative of China's post-virus economic recovery. "Because of COVID-19, many Chinese cannot go overseas," Vice President Liu Bo told reporters. "This actually stimulates online consumption." So far, the performance is likely a relief for Alibaba Group Holding after losing about 10 per cent of its market value last week when regulators scuppered the listing of fintech affiliate Ant Group.
