LAKE CHARLES — When John-Paul Ricks was assessed a technical foul in addition to a personal foul with 2:53 to go in the first half, it looked like a bad thing for top-seeded Jehovah-Jireh. Fifth-seeded Grace Christian quickly cut the Jehovah lead to two points. But to JCA, the long game always matters, whether it means going the length of the court or playing four quarters. Ricks’ move ultimately ignited his team in the second half as Jehovah-Jireh pulled away for a 59-40 victory over Grace Christian in the Division V semifinal that opened Monday’s action at the LHSAA Boys Basketball tournament at Burton Coliseum. After the technical foul, Jehovah-Jireh lead was trimmed to 23-21. “I shouldn’t have done it … but it also got my team going,” Ricks said. “We were dry; we did not have any energy. The Tide Is High–and Getting Higher
Living near the ocean is a dream for many people. But in recent years, the effects of climate change have made it a dicey proposition. Hurricanes have become more intense , leading to bigger storm surges and heavier rainfall that pound coastlines, erode beaches, and destroy homes. That storm threat has been compounded by so-called nuisance flooding that occurs during high tides, even during calm weather and clear skies. A new study shows that nuisance flooding is exacerbated by dredging and the construction of piers and jetties that were intended to make coastal living easier but are in fact redirecting the flow of incoming ocean water and making high tides higher than ever before. Published Friday in the journal Science Advances , the study compared high and low tide ranges measured during the past 70 years with an older database of historic tidal measurements made in the mid-1800s and recently found in stacks of old boxes stored in an annex of the National Archives in … [Read more...] about The Tide Is High–and Getting Higher
2018 Kia Stinger is a stylish gran turismo with biturbo V6 power
Range-topping GT version does 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 5.1 seconds and tops out at 167 mph (269 kph). Kia signaled its desire to launch a gran turismo in September 2011 when it introduced the GT concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, after more than five years, the GT is finally ready for production and it’s going to be called “ Stinger ” in the same vein as the GT4 Stinger unveiled at NAIAS in 2014. It’s debuting today in Detroit with an appealing design pinned at Kia’s studio in Frankfurt and echoing the concept before it. Regardless of viewing angle, the connections between the two are obvious. It doesn’t have the concept’s suicide doors, but other than that it remains faithful and in this range-topping GT trim looks quite aggressive and stylish at the same time. At 190.2 inches (4.8 meters) long and 73.6 inches (1.87 meters) wide, the Stinger is one of the biggest models in its segment and also has one of the longest wheelbases among competitors, stretching at … [Read more...] about 2018 Kia Stinger is a stylish gran turismo with biturbo V6 power
