REUTERS: Confused by kilowatts? Can’t tell an anode from a cathode? Here is a simple guide to the jargon likely to be tossed around at Tesla’s Battery Day on Sept. 22. CELLS AND PACKS A Tesla Model 3 uses a single lithium-ion battery pack that houses four smaller modules. Each module contains 700 to 1,000 individual cylindrical cells, shaped much like the ones in a flashlight. Cells can come in different shapes and sizes, but most have three key elements: Electrodes, electrolyte and separator. Electrodes store the lithium. The electrolyte carries the lithium ions between electrodes. The separator keeps the positive electrode from coming in contact with the negative electrode. Energy, in the form of electricity, is discharged from the battery cell when lithium ions flow from the negative electrode, or anode, to the positive electrode, or cathode. When the cell is charging, those ions flow in the opposite direction, from cathode to anode. Panasonic supplies cylindrical … [Read more...] about Explainer: How to interpret Tesla’s Battery Day lingo

No toilet paper? Health experts say washing may be better than wiping
If you aren’t able to find toilet paper in your neighbourhood supermarket owing to the panic buying , it may be a good time to switch to washing instead of wiping. Although research on which makes a more hygienic method – wiping or washing – is scarce, some experts are advocating the latter. "Think about using dry toilet paper. You're leaving a residue of stool and bacteria, whereas if you're using a bidet, you’re washing that away," said Dr Phillip Buffington, the chief medical officer of The Urology Group in the US. As a result, those who wash or use the bidet “are much less likely to have issues with rashes and discomfort and irritation," said Dr Allen Kamrava, a California-based colorectal and general surgeon, in Healthline. There’s also the issue of anal tears because not everyone wipes gently with toilet paper. Dr Evan Goldstein, a rectal surgeon in New York City, said in Business Insider Singapore that the most common anus-related injuries are tears caused by … [Read more...] about No toilet paper? REUTERS: Teenager Lorenzo Musetti brandished his reputation as a next-generation star by taking down Japan's Kei Nishikori in straight sets at the Italian Open on Thursday for back-to-back wins against former top-five players. The 18-year-old Italian also defeated three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka, a former world number three, in two sets on Tuesday in only his second Tour level match. Musetti proved it was no flash in the pan when he comfortably defeated former world number four and 2014 U.S. Open finalist Nishikori 6-3 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome. "I always used to be a warrior, a fighter, but I had a lot of ups and downs during the past year," said Musetti, who won the Australian Open in 2019 as a junior before turning professional the same year. Musetti, ranked 249, needed a wildcard to compete in the Italian Open qualifiers and will next meet German Dominik Koepfer, who beat Frenchman Gael Monfils, for a possible … [Read more...] about Italian teenager Musetti continues dream run in Rome
Commentary: Alibaba makes a whopping US$28 billion bet on its next breakthrough act
SINGAPORE: No doubt that demand for cloud services is booming during and after the coronavirus crisis. As workplaces and schools migrate into homes, a surge in the use of communications software such as DingTalk and Zoom is putting pressure on cloud services. The crisis hardly hides the boon for companies such as Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba knows it had better move quick to upgrade and expand its cloud infrastructure. Its US$28 billion investment announced on Monday (Apr 20), almost exactly half of its entire 2019 revenue, is certainly going to get them far, maybe even far enough to make a play for the market share of other cloud services operators Amazon and Microsoft in places other than their home US market. Much of this investment will go into the expansion of data centres and networks, with another chunk into technology development in software and semiconductors, the tech behemoth said in its announcement.
