SINGAPORE: From April, high-powered electric motorcycles may be used on Singapore's roads, in line with efforts to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles in the country. Under current regulations, only electric motorcycles with a power rating of no more than 10 kilowatts (kW) are allowed. Those motorcycles are also barred from use on expressways. However, from Apr 1, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will allow motorcycles with power ratings of more than than 10kW to be ridden on the roads. Electric motorcycles with a top speed of at least 50kmh will also be allowed on expressways from next month. Announcing the move - as well as a slew of other measures to incentivise the adoption of electric vehicles - Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary said this was in line with efforts to update regulations to keep pace with technology. “Motorcyclists can then now do their part for the environment by choosing an electric model,” said Dr Janil during the … [Read more...] about High-powered electric motorcycles to be allowed on Singapore roads from April

Ex-Trump adviser Cohn seeks US$600 million for blank-check company IPO
NEW YORK: Gary Cohn, the former economic adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, has teamed up with investor Clifton S. Robbins to seek US$600 million in an initial public offering (IPO) for a new blank-check acquisition company, filings showed on Tuesday. Cohn is the latest high-profile name to join the frenzy of Wall Street dealmaking related to special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). SPACs were considered a banking backwater a decade ago but have emerged in 2020 as one of the most active areas on Wall Street, driven by splashy deals for the likes of space tourism company Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc and fantasy sports and gambling company DraftKings Inc. High-profile financiers such as Bill Ackman, Michael Klein and Chamath Palihapitiya as well as former U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan are among the sponsors for SPAC IPOs in 2020. A SPAC is a shell company that raises money through an IPO to buy an unspecified operating company to then take public, usually within two … [Read more...] about Ex-Trump adviser Cohn seeks US$600 million for blank-check company IPO
Dengue risk still high due to low herd immunity, more people working from home
SINGAPORE: The surge in dengue cases is due to a "confluence of factors" such as low immunity to certain serotypes of the virus, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Wednesday (Aug 5) as the number of cases hit a record high . A total of 22,403 dengue cases have been reported so far this year, surpassing the annual high of 22,170 in 2013. Twenty people have died from dengue this year as of Aug 2. Even though the weekly number of cases fell from a high of 1,792 in the third week of July to 1,380 last week, NEA said the weekly numbers remain "persistently high" at above 1,000. READ: Singapore's dengue cases reach a record 22,403, surpassing 2013 high Apart from low herd immunity, the fact that people continue to work from home and an expected high mosquito population in the warmer months of the year mean that Singapore continues to be at high risk for dengue. LOW HERD IMMUNITY Singapore's population has low herd immunity against dengue due to some success … [Read more...] about Dengue risk still high due to low herd immunity, more people working from home
Nasdaq closes at all-time high as strong tech sector offsets jobless data
NEW YORK: Nasdaq ended at a record high on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Dow also rising, as gains in heavyweight tech stocks outweighed downbeat data that affirmed the Federal Reserve's view of a difficult road to economic recovery. Gains in Apple Inc - the only publicly listed U.S. company to cross the US$2 trillion market value milestone - Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp underpinned the three main indexes' gains as investors bet they would ride out the economic crisis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 46.85 points, or 0.17per cent, to 27,739.73, the S&P 500 gained 10.66 points, or 0.32per cent, to 3,385.51 and the Nasdaq Composite added 118.49 points, or 1.06per cent, to 11,264.95. Stocks had opened lower on data that showed jobless claims rose unexpectedly back above the 1 million mark last week after slipping below that level for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Separate data from the Philadelphia Fed showed a business conditions index … [Read more...] about Nasdaq closes at all-time high as strong tech sector offsets jobless data
Shares start month on a high as PMIs point to economic rebound
LONDON: Stocks started September on a positive note, with global indexes close to all-time highs and Europe edging higher, pushed up by Chinese factory data that showed a rebound in demand. Factory activity in China expanded at the fastest rate in nearly a decade in August, a private PMI survey showed on Tuesday, contrasting with an official survey on Monday that showed output in the country's factories grew slightly more slowly last month as floods hit the southwest. Both surveys pointed to improving export orders. The MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 49 countries, was close to its highest ever, while the pan-European Stoxx 600 was up 0.2per cent at 0809 GMT. France's Cac 40 was up 0.4per cent and Germany's Dax was up 0.6per cent. Britain's FTSE 100 lagged, down 0.9per cent. European stocks had opened even higher but pared gains after the German government revised down its GDP forecast for 2021. PMI data from across Europe showed manufacturing activity … [Read more...] about Shares start month on a high as PMIs point to economic rebound
