High school students in Bangkok are being summoned for violating the emergency decree after police found they had joined the banned anti-government protests last month. The 2 teens spoke at a rally on October 15, a day after PM Prayut announced that tougher actions would be taken against protesters. The students were directly targetted out of tens of thousands of people who defied the ban on public gatherings in order to demand the removal of the PM himself while demanding reforms of the monarchy. 15 year old Benjamaporn Nivas sent Reuters a message on her position towards the ban on protesters. “Even if you arrest protest leaders, there is not enough space in prison because hundreds more will rise up.” Indeed the students aren’t stopping as the “Bad Student” group is set to hold another protest today with Benjamaporn saying she would attend. 17 year old Lopanapat Wangpaisit was the other student who was summoned although it is not clear that the recent action taken against him … [Read more...] about High school students summoned for violating emergency decree after joining banned protest

History: The Thai army’s struggle for power over the navy
PHUKET: Thailand has witnessed many attempted and successful coups since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932. In 1938, Field Marshall Plaek Phibunsongkhram, a military strongman, rose to power and became Thailand’s prime minister. Phibunsongkhram, or as many Western historians prefer to call him, Phibun, was a controversial figure. He led Thailand into the Second World War by openly siding with the Japanese against the Allied Powers. Phibun, a nationalist and Fascist sympathizer, created a leadership cult through propaganda and military dictatorship. After being ousted from power in 1944, Phibun was able to stage another coup against the civilian government of Prime Minister Thawal Thamrong in 1947. Phibun declared himself prime minister once again in 1948. The years that followed his second premiership would be plagued by several attempted coups against him. During his second premiership, Phibun changed his attitude drastically. Once a staunch supporter of fascism and Japanese … [Read more...] about History: The Thai army’s struggle for power over the navy
Phuket Boating: Pershing the limits [VIDEO]
PHUKET: If boating enthusiasts know one thing, they know there is cruising in style, and then there is Pershing. The range of high-end yachts from Italian boatbuilder Ferretti, from the baby 50.1 to the silver bullet 115ft, deliver exactly what is expected of a yacht dubbed the “Lamborghini of the sea”. Hand-stitched leather interior by Poltrona Frau, the exclusive leather supplier to Ferarri and Maserati, sleek lines, sublime wood finishing throughout whisper elegance – but lurking beneath the beauty is the beast: twin-V12 turbo engines each producing up to 1,640hp that rocket the boat up to speeds of 45 knots. That’s about 80kmh, on the water. “Owners in Thailand have embraced the Pershing brand,” said Martin Holmes, general manager at Lee Marine, based at Phuket Boat Lagoon. “When they go out, they do not go out for week – time is precious. With a boat like this, you can go from Amanpuri to the Similans in about 40 minutes in absolute comfort. “And when everyone turns up – … [Read more...] about Phuket Boating: Pershing the limits [VIDEO]
102 Years of Milestones in Women’s History
The feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s reminded the world that women have always played important historical roles, despite often being overlooked. But even in the 21st century, many popular history books are written by and about men —usually covering war heroes, generals, and the country's founding fathers. Studies of U.S. history and social studies classes also find that state education standards focus on men and gloss over the roles of women outside of the home. Though many people today proudly proclaim to be feminists , women around the world are still paid less for the same work, live in fear of physical violence and sexual assault , and lack rights and representation across industries. Women's History Month in March and the commemoration of International Women's Day on March 8 allow us to celebrate the strides women have made across social, economic, political, and cultural spectrums. Observing milestones in women's history also reminds us of the steps still … [Read more...] about 102 Years of Milestones in Women’s History
