LONDON: Drugmakers are racing to scoop up patient health records and strike deals with technology companies as big data analytics start to unlock a trove of information about how medicines perform in the real world. Studying such real-world evidence offers manufacturers a powerful tool to prove the value of their drugs - something Roche aims to leverage, for example, with last month's US$2 billion purchase of Flatiron Health. Real-world evidence involves collecting data outside traditional randomised clinical trials, the current gold standard for judging medicines, and interest in the field is ballooning. Half of the world's 1,800 clinical studies involving real-world or real-life data since 2006 have been started in the last three years, with a record 300 last year, according to a Reuters analysis of the US National Institutes of Health's clinicaltrials.gov website. Hot areas for such studies include cancer, heart disease and respiratory disorders. Historically, it has … [Read more...] about Big pharma, big data: Why drugmakers want your health records

Exclusive — Sen. Roger Marshall: Mental Health Problems Are Bigger Threat to America than Coronavirus
“Mental health is a better bigger threat to this country right now than the coronavirus is,” Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) said, referring to psychological damage driven by lockdowns and shutdowns, on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow. “This is the worst shape the mental health of our youth has ever been in,” Marshall said. “My daughter’s got two little kids at home. I’ve got to tell you — she’s stressed, I ‘m stressed, my wife is stressed — because we know we know our kids should be in school. We’re stressed that our kids aren’t learning, right?” “The mental health of this country has never been worse,” he continued. “I think the mental health is a bigger threat to this country right now than the coronavirus is, mainly because we’re just whipping the heck out of this virus right now.” LISTEN : Marshall noted how Democrats and the broader left regularly frame their ideological positions as scientific. “The Democrats use the … [Read more...] about Exclusive — Sen. We Need to Prioritize Teacher Mental Health
A lot of teachers I know don’t eat lunch during the day. There’s just not enough time, too much to do, and too many unrealistic expectations placed on us sometimes. I have to eat lunch every day and set that boundary or I won’t be able to function later in the day, but I can completely understand why they don’t. In our school district, we’ve placed a heavy emphasis on trauma -informed instruction and social-emotional learning, which is defined by Aperture Education as the following: Source: fizkes/Shutterstock “The process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals , feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” When I first started teaching, I was really happy that the district and my school were going head over heels embracing social-emotional learning … [Read more...] about We Need to Prioritize Teacher Mental Health
F%$& Shame, TEDx and Mental Health
I recently gave a talk at the TEDxUCLA conference. The point of the talk was to point out just how impactful, often negatively so, mental health labels can be. In case you are not aware, labels typically come with expectations. As I point out in my talk, these expectations can actually alter individual performance and bias those who are labelled towards meeting their reduced expected success. This effect has different names in different contexts including the expectancy effect , stereotype threat , and experimenter bias . Look them up, listen to the talk (and I've included the text to make things easier) and judge for yourself! I think you'll find that there's a pretty convincing case for reducing our reliance on mental health labels as predictors of success in life. Rebranding our shame I’m going to start with an experiment, but I’m going to need your help. What words would you use to describe me? What labels? In August of 2001, I woke up in a hospital bed. Now … [Read more...] about F%$& Shame, TEDx and Mental Health
