Song Exploder: Jóhann Jóhannsson on the Secrets of

This fall, Vulture is partnering with the podcast Song Exploder for a series of episodes on the most interesting film scores of the year. Here, host Hrishikesh Hirway interviews Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson about the music of Arrival , his third collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve. (His fourth, the Blade Runner sequel, is coming in 2017.) Jóhannsson was nominated twice in the Oscars’ Best Score category last year, and his minimalist arrangements for Arrival have made him one of the front runners in this year’s race as well. Below, Jóhannsson walks Hirway through the structure of the soundtrack’s “Heptapod B,” explaining how he drew from the film’s linguistic themes in its composition. A few excerpts from the conversation follow; listen to the episode below, and subscribe to Song Exploder on iTunes . On creating the overall sound of the score: I was working in a studio in Berlin with some great analog tape machines, and spent several days … [Read more...] about Song Exploder: Jóhann Jóhannsson on the Secrets of

New Mortal Kombat Reboot Theme Song Arrives, It’ll Get You Hyped and Ready to Fight

If you weren't already reasonably hyped for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot, composer Benjamin Wallfisch is sure to rectify that with his take on the classic theme tune, which you can listen to now. Titled "Techno Syndrome 2021," this updated take on the beloved theme features on the movie's official soundtrack and should have you shouting "Mortal Kombat!" and looking around for someone to throw hands with. Benjamin Wallfisch is best known for his work on the likes of IT , IT Chapter 2 , Shazam! , and Blade Runner: 2049 alongside Hans Zimmer, and has clearly worked hard to find a way to bring the theme song back for the Mortal Kombat reboot. Whether or not it retains the impact of the original is open to debate. Danny Elfman Previews First Solo Album in 37 Years With New Song ‘True’

Acclaimed composer Danny Elfman has released a new song, “True,” which will appear on his first solo album in 37 years, Big Mess , out June 11th via Anti-/Epitaph. “True” is a menacing track that finds Elfman toying with grinding synths, booming industrial drums and blown-out guitar, while sharp strings give the song an even more sinister edge. “I got no destination,” Elfman sings on the track, “I just got termination/We talk about our harmony/We think about our termination.” “True” arrives with an equally eerie music video directed by multimedia artist Sarah Sitkin. “The video is an exploration of fractured identity, muffled through the lens of memory,” Sitkin said in a statement. “Danny is a central figure within the video, yet only in his reproduced likeness via prosthetics, masks, and 3D printed body parts. I wanted to make a video that was gritty, unpolished and uncomfortable.” Related Stories Danny Elfman Teams Up With Death Grips' Zach Hill for 'Kick Me' … [Read more...] about Danny Elfman Previews First Solo Album in 37 Years With New Song ‘True’
