REUTERS: A Black Facebook Inc worker on Thursday filed a complaint claiming the social media giant's stated commitment to diversity and civil rights, including its support for the Black Lives Matter movement, masks widespread discrimination against Black workers. Oscar Veneszee, a Washington D.C.-based operations program manager, said in a charge filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that Facebook has shown a pattern of discrimination in hiring, performance evaluations, promotions and pay, and that Black workers fill just 1.5per cent of its technical positions. "There may be Black Lives Matter posters on Facebook's walls, but black workers don't see that phrase reflecting how they are treated in Facebook's own workplace," Veneszee said in the complaint. Veneszee was joined by two Black professionals who said they had applied for various jobs with Facebook but were never hired despite being qualified for the positions. ‘We made a wrong call’: Facebook says it should have informed users earlier on Cambridge Analytica breach
SINGAPORE: Social media giant Facebook said on Thursday (Mar 22) that it “got it wrong” and it had a “moral obligation” to inform its users earlier about the breach in its policies involving political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. This is according to its vice-president of public policy for Asia-Pacific, Simon Milner, who appeared before the Select Committee on Deliberate Online Falsehoods. He was questioned by Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam for about three hours. Mr Shanmugam had quizzed Mr Milner about allegations that Facebook data was misused by Cambridge Analytica and whether it was “odd” that users on the social media platform were not informed earlier. To that, Mr Milner said “it definitely looks like a decision where we made a wrong call”. “We should have let people know. Our CEO has owned that decision and said that we got that wrong,” he added, referring to founder Mark Zuckerberg’s post on Facebook overnight. In that post, Zuckerberg admitted that … [Read more...] about ‘We made a wrong call’: Facebook says it should have informed users earlier on Cambridge Analytica breach
