China’s Sinovac vaccine 67 per cent effective against symptomatic infection: Chile report

SANTIAGO (REUTERS) - Sinovac's Covid-19 vaccine CoronaVac was 67 per cent effective in preventing symptomatic infection in the first real-world study of the Chinese shot, the Chilean government said on Friday (April 16). The vaccine was 85 per cent effective in preventing hospitalisations and 80 per cent effective in preventing deaths, the government said in a report prepared by the Chilean health ministry. The release of the data makes Chile one of a handful of countries, including the United Kingdom and Israel, that have used inoculation campaigns to gather insights into how effective vaccines are outside controlled clinical trials and when faced with unpredictable variables in societies. Israel's real-world study of the effectiveness of Pfizer's vaccine looked at the results among 1.2 million people, a mix of those who received the shot and those who did not. Chile's study examined CoronaVac's effectiveness among 10.5 million people, again looking both at people who had been … [Read more...] about China’s Sinovac vaccine 67 per cent effective against symptomatic infection: Chile report

The internet search giant also announced that it is helping to fund pop-up vaccine sites in the US and committing an additional $250 million in Ad Grants to connect people to accurate vaccine information. "We're also announcing that Google Cloud is launching a virtual agent where people without internet access can schedule vaccine appointments and ask questions about eligibility and availability over the phone - in up to 28 languages and dialects," it said. Venezuelan Displacement Crisis Needs U.S. Support | Opinion

Lately there have rightly been a flurry of articles marking the 10th anniversary of the Syrian conflict. The situation deserves to be in the news: half the population has been displaced and 6 million have fled the country. But in the Americas there is a similar exodus, from Venezuela, and it deserves attention too. This is a tragedy in the American hemisphere, and while the politics are fraught, the U.S. has unique leverage. A bold and strategic humanitarian response is compelling and within reach. Five million people have fled Venezuela. The reasons given to International Rescue Committee (IRC) staff at the Simon Bolivar International Bridge to Colombia and elsewhere are simple: Life is intolerable. They tell us of power outages that result in a lack of basic necessities like clean water, of health facilities where doctors and nurses don't have medicine, medical supplies or PPE to safely treat them and of their desperate need for work so they can afford food and medicine for their … [Read more...] about Venezuelan Displacement Crisis Needs U.S. Support | Opinion

Mike Tyson is apparently getting into the marijuana business. The former heavyweight champion recently broke ground on a 40-acre plot of desert in California, which he intends on turning into a cannabis resort that produces “high quality strains of THC and CBD,” The Blast reports .
