The Denver Broncos suddenly have an interesting quarterback situation heading into 2021. After the Broncos traded for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater , incumbent starter Drew Lock’s spot is on shaky ground. There were rumblings of the Broncos also drafting a quarterback, but they opted for Alabama defensive back Patrick Surtain II in the first round. Head coach Vic Fangio did acknowledge there will be a quarterback competition as the Broncos try and find their solution to the most important position. Fangio spoke with the media after the draft concluded. “Fangio on how he will split reps with Lock/Bridgewater. Lock start, Bridgewater back up? ‘It will be something that at the end of the day, maybe not at the end of every day but over the course of OTAs and training camp, it’ll be 50-50.’ #9sports ,” Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver tweeted. CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora said earlier this month that the Broncos were considered the favorite to land … [Read more...] about Where things stand in Denver Broncos QB competition

The Broncos started their task of finding a new right tackle Wednesday by scheduling free-agent visits next week for Dennis Kelly and Bobby Massie, according to a source. Not on the radar just yet is Demar Dotson, who started eight games at right tackle for the Broncos last year. Dotson could be an option as the offseason progresses. The Broncos entered the right tackle market Tuesday when projected starter Ja’Wuan James sustained an Achilles injury while training and their initial focus appears to be on players who have right tackle experience and not left tackles who would need to play a new position. Massie turns 32 on Aug. 1 and became a free agent when Chicago declined his contract option. He signed a four-year, $30.8 million deal in 2019. Massie has 110 career starts at right tackle for Arizona and the Bears. His first three years with Chicago (2016-18) overlapped with Broncos coach Vic Fangio’s final three as defensive coordinator. Entering 2019, Massie had started … [Read more...] about Broncos Briefs: Search for right tackle begins with Bobby Massie, Dennis Kelly
Denver Post Broncos writer Ryan O’Halloran posts his Broncos Mailbag periodically during the offseason. Submit questions to Ryan here . Why do fans always seem to believe that highly touted draft prospects are a better choice than proven veterans (especially at quarterback position)? Do they not learn from history? To remind everyone that Teddy Bridgewater is not such a bad deal, can you please type the names: Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Josh Rosen, Johnny Manziel (feel free to add a few more)? — Alan, Belize I don’t care about past quarterback history. For every one of those busts, I mention Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck and Cam Newton — solid top-10 picks. I have no problem with the Bridgewater trade and I would have really liked it if he would have served as a bridge to Justin Fields. Among the quarterbacks Alan mentioned, Leaf (Chargers), Russell (Raiders) and Smith (Bengals) joined dysfunctional … [Read more...] about Broncos Mailbag: If Aaron Rodgers is traded to Denver, would talent around him be Super Bowl-quality?
Right tackle Ja’Wuan James’ Broncos career is likely over after he sustained an Achilles tendon injury Tuesday while training at an off-site facility in the Denver area, a source confirmed. James had been working out at the Broncos’ facility this offseason until the NFLPA began urging players to boycott on-site work, which is supervised by the team’s strength and conditioning staff. Signed to a four-year, $51 million contract in March 2019, James was limited to three halves of action and 63 snaps because of multiple knee issues and opting out of the ’20 season due to coronavirus concerns. James being injured off-site may cost him at least $15 million. When James opted out last August, his contract tolled ahead one year (through 2023), creating $13 million in salary cap space. Because James was injured off-site, the Broncos could void his $10 million guaranteed base salary this year and the $5 million guaranteed of his 2022 $11 million base salary, according to a league … [Read more...] about Broncos right tackle Ja’Wuan James tears Achilles during workout, source says
Jeff Driskel’s uneventful tenure with the Broncos has come to an end, as Denver released the quarterback Monday. Driskel signed a two-year, $5 million deal ahead of the 2020 season to be Drew Lock’s backup, but that didn’t pan out as he made just one start before being demoted to third string. The 28-year-old Driskel nearly led the Broncos to a comeback win in Week 2 after Lock went down with a shoulder injury in Pittsburgh, but his performance the next Sunday was poor. He was benched on the final possession of that Week 3 home loss to Tampa Bay in favor of Brett Rypien. After being sacked 11 times over two games, coach Vic Fangio expressed frustration that the quarterback was hanging on to the ball too long. Driskel threw three touchdowns and two interceptions, and had a 78.4 rating with the Broncos. Cutting the quarterback creates $2.5 million in cap space for Denver. The departure of Driskel leaves three quarterbacks under contract for the Broncos: Lock, Rypien and … [Read more...] about Broncos release quarterback Jeff Driskel, sign tight end Eric Saubert
