GORILLAZ released their long-awaited Humanz album last year and toured the UK at the end of 2017. The band won the award for Best British Group at the BRIT Awards 2018 . But what else do we know about them? Who are Gorillaz? Gorillaz were formed in 1998 by the Blur frontman and acclaimed solo artist Damon Albarn, and graphic artist Jamie Hewlett. They had been friends for several years but came up with the idea for the cartoon group when watching MTV after moving into a flat together. The band features four fictional members, with Hewlett providing the visual effects. These are: 2D, on vocals and keyboards; Murdoch, on bass guitar and drum machine; Russel Hobbs, on drums and percussion; and Noodle, on guitars, keys and vocals. A 2000 EP, Tomorrow Comes Today, went largely under the radar, but their debut single, the iconic "Clint Eastwood", launched the band into the spotlight. Gorillaz' eponymous first album was a global hit, climbing to number six in the UK … [Read more...] about Who are Gorillaz? Brit Awards 2018 winners and virtual pop band who released new album Humanz
For this writer, the quintessential moment of the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival came in transit. A quick stroll on Saturday afternoon took me from the main stage, where Laurie Anderson was wrapping up a set of luminous, exploratory string-trio free improv, to one of the smaller tents, where octogenarian Memphis piano master Harold Mabern, saxophonist Eric Alexander & Co. were busy muscling through a set of exquisite old-school hardbop. The transition was disorienting in the best way possible — an illustration of just how broad this legendary fest’s concept of jazz still is. Thanks to its upscale beach-town setting, the Rhode Island festival might still have an air of old-money gentility. But on the ground, the event feels populist and homegrown, thanks to hand-painted welcome signs (“We’re all here together and it’s festival time!”), a sea of lawn chairs and coolers, and of course the legendary main-stage view of the water, where a whole other audience can be seen taking in the … [Read more...] about Newport Jazz Festival 2018: 14 Best Things We Saw
Germany has banned the Islamic NGO Ansaar International after it was accused of sending money to terrorist groups in Syria and Somalia. The ban comes as police carried out raids on the association in ten different German states on Wednesday, searching and seizing objects in Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hesse. According to a report from the German newspaper Die Welt , the Interior Ministry has claimed that the NGO, founded in 2012, was covertly raising money for the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia, the Al-Nusra Front in Syria, and Hamas in Palestine, while claiming to support charitable causes. In 2018 alone, Ansaar International was believed to have collected as much as €8 to €10 million (£6.95m – £8.69m/$9.65m – $12.1m) in donations. According to Deutsche Welle, the organisation is also accused of issuing fake donation receipts and forging documents. … [Read more...] about Germany Bans Islamic NGO After Accusations of Terrorism Funding
Last year’s pandemic lockdown complicates any year-over-year comparisons when it comes to metro Denver’s housing market, but a few trends definitely remain in play, and some new ones are gaining strength. There still aren’t enough properties available given demand, listings that do hit the market are going under contract in a flash, and prices continue to accelerate at a pace unimaginable a year ago, according to the Denver Metro Association of Realtors market trends report for April . And in something rarely seen, luxury homes, defined as those topping $1 million, are a hot commodity, selling in one-third the time and at double the pace of recent years. “Since last year, we have seen a steady rise in competition and therefore prices. With only two weeks of inventory, prices continue to be on the rise,” said Andrew Abrams, chairman of DMAR’s Market Trends Committee, in comments accompanying DMAR’s market trends report for April. Two weeks in that there were only 2,594 … [Read more...] about Metro Denver housing market developing a taste for luxury
