Commentary: Two freed journalists and the secret role Aung San Suu Kyi might have played

NEW DELHI: On Tuesday (May 7), two Reuters journalists – Wa Lone, 33, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29 – were released from Insein prison after spending more than 500 days behind bars, along with thousands of other prisoners, after being pardoned by President U Win Myint as part of the country’s New Year celebrations, which began on Apr 17. The journalists were convicted in September last year by a district court judge in Yangon and subsequently sentenced to seven years in jail. Since their release, there have been two major prevailing opinions. The first is a cynical view that the journalists’ release is a sign Myanmar has finally cracked after coming under huge international criticism but the biggest challenges lie ahead. Cynics say the amnesty granted was short-lived good news that do not address … [Read more...] about Commentary: Two freed journalists and the secret role Aung San Suu Kyi might have played

Stories will appear in a section called the "news tab", which will be separate from the traditional news feed that displays updates and content from users' friends and relatives. "In theory, I see this as a really positive development. It is something quite promising," Danna Young, a communications professor at the University of Delaware, told AFP. … [Read more...] about What does Facebook’s plan to hire journalists mean for media industry?

An Australian member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said on an Australian morning TV show that the organization hadn’t previously considered the absence of Black journalists “a problem” to be “focused” on. Jenny Cooney , appearing on Today Australia Monday, was asked about the HFPA ’s lack of diversity, as issue that drew anger and attention from Golden Globes presenters Sunday night. Addressing the topic, Cooney said that “the fact that there was not a Black member was not really anything we focused on because we were accepting and welcoming everybody from around the world that was based in L.A. that wrote for foreign publications, that was just our criteria.” Watch the interview above.
