Olympic torch runs through empty park in Osaka as cases rise
TOKYO: The torch relay for the Tokyo Olympics ran through a mostly empty Osaka city park on Tuesday, showing the risks of trying to hold the postponed games during a pandemic. It came on the same day that the government said new coronavirus cases in Osaka hit 1,099, a single-day record for Japan’s second largest metropolitan area. The torch relay began three weeks ago in northeastern Japan, attempting to navigate around the pandemic with a total of 10,000 runners crisscrossing the country and bound for the opening ceremony on July 23 in Tokyo. Osaka, which announced plans last week to take the relay off city streets and bar the public, became the first detour since the relay began. Organizers warned beforehand there may be more. Stone Mountain Park Denies Permit for Confederate Memorial Day Event
The Stone Mountain Memorial Association has denied a permit to the Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) to hold an event this Saturday to mark Confederate Memorial Day. Stone Mountain Park is controversial for its giant depictions of Confederate leaders, which are carved into the side of the mountain, and its historical association with the Ku Klux Klan. The Georgia SCV has held a Confederate Memorial Day event at the site 18 times previously but last year the group's plans were thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bill Stephens, CEO of Stone Mountain Memorial Association, wrote a letter explaining the decision on March 31, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
