PHUKET: A hotel cook drowned last night at Nong Harn Lake , at the northern end of Phuket’s tourist-popular Karon Beach, sparking a three-hour search for his body. Kasin Wirachod, 41, employed by a prominent Karon hotel, supplemented his income by catching fish in the lake, an old tin mine quarry surrounded by resorts and restaurants. Mr Kasin, originally from Sakon Nakhon, was setting nets with a friend – identified only as “Dum” – at about 7pm. After completing part of their work, Mr Dum went to buy alcohol to combat the cold, the Phuket Gazette was told. Mr Dum returned to see a foreign tourist swimming out to help Mr Kasin, who was in the water shouting for help as the long-tail boat they were using was sinking. Despite the efforts of the tourist and Mr Dum, both the boat and Mr Kasin were lost. PHUKET: A distressed Australian tourist in Phuket jumped to his death from the sixth floor of a hotel in Patong today. Marc Gerard Hoy, 34, had worried staff at the Bel Air Resort Phuket near Patong Hospital by behaving strangely when he checked in at 3am this morning. A female hotel receptionist, who asked not to be named, told the Phuket Gazette that she discovered Mr Hoy sitting silently in the hotel reception in the early hours. “I said ‘Hello’ to him a few times but he seemed drunk and a bit incoherent. I tried talking to him but he just stared fixedly at our security guard.” Eventually, Mr Hoy replied to the receptionist and asked to check in. As he filled in the guest form, the hotel security guard, who also asked not to be named, noticed the handle of a small knife poking out at his waist. PHUKET: A Thai soap star and former Miss Teen Thailand from Phuket is in serious condition following a car accident in Pathum Thani. Ameria ‘Amy’ Jacobs, 21, and 25-year-old Buphakorn Nilat are being treated in Krung Siam St Carlos Hospital in the central Thai province. Mr Buphakorn was driving Miss Jacobs home to Nonthaburi province when he lost control of his car in the early hours of yesterday morning. The car crashed into an electricity poll at high speed. When rescuers reached the scene they found Mr Buphakorn trapped in the driver’s seat. Thrown from the vehicle, Miss Jacobs was lying on the ground unconscious. The Thai Rath newspaper reported that Miss Jacobs is being kept in intensive care and has suffered cerebral bleeding. Mr Buphakorn told reporters that before the accident Miss Jacobs had been filming at Dara Video’s soap opera studio in Pathum Thani. PHUKET: One man succumbed to his injuries after a Krathom-carrying duo’s ‘police chase’ went awry yesterday afternoon near the entrance to Rassada Pier. Lt Col Santi Prakhobpran of Phuket City Police received a report at about 2:20pm. “Witnesses told us that a pick-up truck was turning right when two motorcyclists attempted to pass across its front. They scratched past the truck, but lost control of their motorbike and ran into an electric pole,” said the Colonel. Sitthisak Khuekerd, 28, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while the other bike rider was seriously injured and taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “We found Krathom on Mr Sitthisak’s person. He told us that they were riding fast because they saw police and thought they were being chased,” said Col Santi. PHUKET: Another teenaged motorcyclist has been killed on Phuket’s roads today, this time in a bloody crash with an airport taxi while in a U-turn on the Bypass Road. Maj Natthaya Suwannapong of Phuket City Police arrived with Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers at the U-turn in front of the Ikea store. The taxi driver, Atiwara Samarnthong, 37, was waiting for police at the scene at about 1:15am. “Mr Atiwara told us that he was taking two passengers to Patong from the airport when the boy turned into the road right in front of him. The taxi crashed into the bike, causing the teenager, hit by the windscreen, to fly out onto the road, ” said Maj Natthaya. The victim, Krissada Junmanee, 18, and his motorbike lay about 20 meters away from the point of impact.
