HELSINKI: Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya expects mass protests against veteran President Alexander Lukashenko to start up again in the spring and to be more organised than last year. Speaking to Reuters on a visit to Finland, Tsikhanouskaya said a majority of Belarusians still thought Lukashenko should step down and they had spent the winter getting organised. "The chair under Lukashenko is shaking," she said. Belarusians took to the streets last year in large numbers after a presidential election in August that the opposition said was rigged. The authorities responded with a crackdown. The size of the protests dwindled over the winter and Lukashenko, who promised to make unspecified reforms to the constitution, appears to have weathered the storm. Tsikhanouskaya said the opposition is talking to people in the Belarusian elites, the state administration and riot police and was getting inside information about torture and violence. "People near him … [Read more...] about Belarusian opposition leader expects new wave of protests

Trump’s Labor Secretary Acosta resigns amid Epstein case
WASHINGTON: US Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned on Friday (Jul 12) amid fresh scrutiny of his handling of the sex abuse case against financier Jeffrey Epstein, becoming President Donald Trump's latest adviser to leave the administration in controversy. Acosta, joining Trump at the White House before the president left for a trip to Wisconsin, said he did not want to be a distraction to the administration's work because of his leadership of the Epstein case more than a decade ago. "As I look forward, I do not think it is right and fair for this administration's Labor Department to have Epstein as a focus rather than the incredible economy we have today," Acosta said. Trump, who has fired numerous cabinet and other administration officials during his 2.5 years in the White House, said it was Acosta's idea to step down. "Alex called me this morning and wanted to see me," Trump told reporters. "I just want to let you know this is him, not me." OPEC inks new charter with Russia and other allies
VIENNA: The OPEC bloc of oil producers on Tuesday (Jul 2) formally signed a new charter of cooperation with major allies including Russia, one day after thrashing out the document at a marathon meeting. The new agreement between OPEC and its so-called OPEC+ partners is being seen as a sign of the cartel's efforts to stay relevant in a market which has been transformed by booming US shale oil output. Saudi Oil Minister Khalid al-Falih hailed this week's meeting as "historic" and said that "market volatility" meant that a new framework was needed with "more producer power than OPEC alone can provide". OPEC Secretary-General Mohammed Barkindo compared the new partnership to a marriage, telling reporters: "It's for eternity!" "We're confident that with the course of time, probably by next time we meet, we may have some new members joining the charter," Barkindo said. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak declared on Monday that all of OPEC's ministers had agreed to prolong … [Read more...] about OPEC inks new charter with Russia and other allies
