U.S. businesses added 517,000 workers in March as states like Texas and Florida lifted pandemic restrictions, data from payroll provider ADP indicated Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Econoday had forecast job growth of 500,00, although estimates ranged from 225,000 to 750,000. In March, Texas Governor Greg Abbott lifted the restrictions on business in his state and ended its mask mandate. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis barred local governments from fining businesses for violations of local covid safety restrictions. Many other states have also eliminated or pared back restrictions placed on businesses during the pandemic. The pandemic appears to have made it harder for ADP to measure job growth, perhaps because so much of the economy is responding to governmental restrictions.  Last year ADP’s estimates consistently failed to track job growth. The National Chairman of ADP, Mr Yusuf Sani, made the assertion at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday. The conference was organised by the party on the state of the nation. The private sector saw a significant boost in jobs in March, adding 517,000 new positions, according to payroll company ADP. “We saw marked improvement in March’s labor market data, reporting the strongest gain since September 2020,” said Nela Richardson, ADP’s chief economist. The increase was the highest since September, when the private sector added 821,000 jobs before falling to more moderate levels through the autumn and winter, including a month of job loss in December. ADVERTISEMENT The lion’s share of the new jobs, 437,000, or 85 percent, came from a rebound in the service sector, which was hardest hit during the pandemic. The uptick included an increase of 169,000 leisure and hospitality jobs, such as restaurant work, a 92,000 increase in trade, transportation and utility  jobs, and 68,000 education and health jobs.
