The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to a still-high 840,000 as long-term jobless figures have risen to record highs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. New claims for state unemployment benefits totaled 840,000 in the week ending October 3, according to the latest figures released by the Labor Department on Thursday. Those figures were down slightly from the 849,000 in the prior week. The number of people who are continuing to receive unemployment benefits dropped 1 million to 11 million, according to the weekly report.
