Two families have spoken out about their extensive struggles to gain proper support for their children – who have special educational needs. This comes after we revealed a family from Langley Mill has been battling with Derbyshire County Council for two years to get an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan for their 12-year-old son, Harvey Jacombs. Harvey’s grandparents, his legal guardians, said that children “were being failed” as a result of delays, and missing out on weeks, months and even years of education. An EHC Plan is a legally binding document, between the county council, school, parents and pupil. It sets out what amount and type of support the pupil needs and how the school and local authority will ensure it is provided. County councillors agreed that pupils should not be “falling through the gaps” and that the authority must approve.
