LESS THAN a week after former Mayor David Dinkins and Rep. Charles Rangel launched an ambitious campaign to save the troubled Boys Choir of Harlem from financial ruin, the two have raked in nearly $1 million in pledges. The impressive one-week total is roughly twice the influential duo’s 30-day goal of $500,000. But more money is needed to pull the choir out of its $5 million debt. Dinkins would not reveal who made the contributions, but he told the Daily News announcements would be made soon. The former mayor and Rangel have been calling on wealthy donors – including Oprah Winfrey, Aretha Franklin and George Foreman – to quickly raise enough cash to prevent the choir from being evicted from a city school building on Jan 31. “As soon as it’s made clear that the city’s going to give us more time beyond Jan. 31, those [pledges] will be realized,” Dinkins said.
